Ode to Ableton haters

So i'm at an after party n this guy is hasslin these girls for usin Live. Sayin they arent real DJs. Mind you, he played a half hr set at 10pm thinkin he was a G_D. 1 song at a time. Nothing added. No Accapellas, no loops. Just a song every 5-6 min or so. I mention how tons of peeps use Ableton to play out. How we used it on Tiesto's "In Search of Sunrise. Los Angeles". He says "that CD sucks", blah blah blah.
He's to that hater:

But just have to ask, were the people using Ableton to DJ doing anything more than this hater was doing?

The one i taught, Eskimo Kisses, A new performer, was playin a couple tracks at a time, and addin FX to them, while she was playing congas, n tablas, off her Akai LPD8. The other one, Wonie, her roommate, super brand nu user/performer, was only playin 1 track at a time, but was doin some fx w her APC40. Both on Macbook Pros, but no ipad...yet =)

That’s cool. Sad thing is some DJs would give a female who train wrecks every transition on vinyl more respect than somebody (of either gender) using Live, no matter how elaborately.

Everybody has to start somewhere, but yeah, I could see a DJ getting upitty if a DJ using Live is just transitioning between 2 tracks. Not a lot of skill involved there. BUT to me track selection trumps all.

OP, your opinion is just as noxious to me as the hater.

don't misunderstand, i absolutely agree that it's ridiculous to be a vinyl or serrato/whatever DJ and take a shit on ableton DJ's for not having to beatmatch manually. However, beat matching manually is obviously a skill set of its own, and not that easy. If you think it is, you are either a natural genius or you've never really tried it... Second, that you are trying to tell us that your opinion is more valid because of where your shit is released, or what fucktard aftershave and bleached hair type electronic musicians you associate with is just as stupid.


So there you go. I'm hating on a whole other level.

Hmmm for a few years now I have used live mainly as a (amateur) DJ tool... and I must say I have a lot of respect for people who go for other platforms. Personally I think Live sucks at beatmatching; I have never been able to play on the fly and I always have to prepare all my tracks carefully beforehand. I don't know why but Live will still routinely get the beats on a track wrong, and I just can't trust that it will know where the start of a bar is. So I envy my friends who use traktor etc and who can play much more on the fly than I can.

Then again, they seem to be unable to pitch shift very much, so mixing in key seems harder to them.

The point wasnt my accomplishments. I ghost write for many people in the industry, and left out tons of labels. I could care less about that. The point was he was hating on Ableton, no matter who i told him used it, or how it was used by them.

I have a lot of respect for DJs. If it wasnt for DJs, i'd probably still be playing drums in a hardcore band,in DC instead of makin electronic music out here in Hollywood. My problem was with a hater, that was pickin on some girls. A hater that hasnt contributed anything to the scene, except for negative energy.

My point was being proud of being an Ableton Live user. And I thought i would share that w this community.

I wanted to give DJing a shot after watching my DJ friends move up and get fans while my Electronic band was playing for 20 people. so i started warping tracks.. i can warp fast but it was still a pain. then i realized the true skill of a good DJ was that they really understood all of the music, bpm, key, vibe, what mixes with what and all that.
now i love music of course but man that is a lot of work to listen to all that music. plus stay on top of trends in your genre's.
yup i gave up that idea in about a week lol.
went back to writing and working on my Live PA sets.

been a DJ since i was 15, track selection is king, format / medium is not important to a crowd, only to a few trainspotters at the front.

I used live for a few mashup / remix sets but found it needed about an hours prep for every minute on stage,
and if the music i had warped / editted wasnt right for the crowd, i was stuffed.

Now I dj with traktor, it's fast and flexible can do 4 tracks but to be frank, if you cant pick 1 song to fit a crowd, why would picking 4 be better? I havent bothered with the F1 controller and sample decks.

As a dj / bedroom producer, live is tantalizing me, it allows me to play my music, not other peoples and in a fluid way rather than just playing an mp3. I wouldnt knock another dj for using a tool, just live isnt my choice for djing but each to their own.

I see that with allot of producer DJ types,
they produce in Ableton then render their tracks so they can play them in serato/tracktor
