Novation impulse aftertouch

Post by skatr2 » Fri Mar 29, 2013 2:33 am

Any impulse users here? I've had this controller for some time, but for some reason never hear aftertouch when I attempt to engage it. The settings are on under the keyboard option. Suggestions?

Works for me. I don't recall doing anything to set it up (although can't say for sure). If you are on a Mac, you can download MidiMonitor. It sits there and monitors all midi messages and scrolls them in a window. I use it a lot if I'm confused about midi stuff. Pressing a key for aftertouch should stream out a ton of midi messages. Not sure about PC, but there has to be something equivalent.

Works fine for me with Impulse 49 linked to a pc. Are you sure your target VST or whatever supports aftertouch and if so, is it mapped to any parameters so that you can hear it?

I have it running through live. Just using some of live's devices for now...but think even my komplete devices weren't responding to it. Is there a specific way I have to map aftertouch? I was under the impression it works by default when you turn it on.

For example in Sampler, under the Midi-tab, you can set the Aftertouch Modulation Targets.
I also had an Impulse for a few days until I exchanged it for a SL zero. I remember I had to press hard to activate the AT.

Quite right Not-Elba. Unfortunately, for Abletons own instruments this only seems to work for Sampler. Many vst synths do have this option(eg Sylenth and Massive), but you have to map AT specifically to a parameter you want to modulate.

ah maybe I'm misinterpreting what after touch actually does. I was under an impression that it interprets the prolonged harder keystroke as a note reinforcement. but what it's for generally is connecting it up via midi to some form of modulation?

Aftertouch is just an additional generated (control) signal. It can be anything you want (modulating any target, effect control etc.).

there is a max effect that can map aftertouch to anything.
Also you can take midiox and also map aftertouch to anything on the midi level.
