Should I use 44.1kHz or 88.2kHz sampling rate?

I know dude.. and I think the pdf I linked to is a nice entry level explanation..
you know..
for a guy who's just asking what dither is..and not knee deep in it already
(wasn't intending to go into semantics..)

Its incredibly misleading for entry level. Probably a few 1000 izotope users out there thinking that there is no quantization error without truncation and that anything going through a DAC is different than what went through the ADC to begin with.

44khz is what's needed to cover the 20khz hearing range in digital. Going above that is supposed to get rid of more aliasing but most struggle to hear an improvement using sample rate higher than that . Higher KHz than CD are used as they sync with Video better. 88khz down converts better to 44khz than 96khz.

Just to clarify

I was not asking what dither is.

In fact, I have absolutely no desire to know what dither is.

If there is dither inside my computer, I hope it bloody well stays there.

All I know is if I must sprinkle it on my audio file or not

I will leave the esoteric arguments and debates to people who care (and who can do the math)

then the answer is no..
better that the person mastering your audio will
if you intend to master yourself.. you probably need to know what where and why...

undithered, that would be the one with the ugly audible harmonics

Always dither when reducing the bitrate So you mix a song in 32bit and the export is 16bit you need to use dither if someone is going to master your song hand it to him in 32bit with no dither.

Yikes!

I work in 88.2. If I mix it down to 44.1, does that mean I *do* have to use dithering?

I'm all in a dither now! 8O

You're confusing sample rate and bit depth, you dither when you reduce bit depth not when you sample rate reduce.

Ah of course.

This comes from surfing the forum when at work. I fail to pay attention
