Idea: Google Earth/Maps search for Live users/collaborators?
Idea: Google Earth/Maps search for Live users/collaborators?
I would find it interesting how many people in my neighborhood are using live and that might be open for collaborations...
Instead of asking and hoping for a reply in a forum it would be nice to see them as pins on a map or using Google Earth.
So like in this picture you would be able to see if there is a bigger user base in your city or a nearby area.
Does anyone know if there are any databases (facebook?/soundcloud?...) available one could gather this kind of information from?
Or is there a similar approach already available somewhere?

That's a cool idea. Goggle's had Earth API open for ages, did you look for it?
Re: Idea: Google Earth/Maps search for Live users/collaborators?
I know about the API, question is where to get the information "i am a live user and I live in..." from?

Ah, I just noticed you didn't mention Max and I must've thought that's what you were posting in that section of the forum, since that's how you could get the Live users.
I'm assuming you can use the Earth Api with javascript so you'd use that in Max to get the location of the Live user. Basically have an instruction in the script that pulls the location info from the users OS settings seems the basic way to do it, maybe someone with more experince has a better idea. OR, you could just have the user say where they are....but then who knows if they're telling the truh or not:p?
I might do a little research.
Actually you could probably do it with a remote script as well, but then the user would have to take up a controller spot to give their info.
Well, I was just thinking of ways that it could be done automatically by getting the location info from the computer, but maybe the manual route from the user would be less of a hassle/intrusive.
Which reminds me that Funken had a widget in his web page to get visitor location,
So hmmm, maybe the Grindr idea...
Thing is, with the max patch, maybe one could set up an a/v/text chat in Live for anyone using the patch, which siunds kind of cool; like a google hangout type of thing. And you could use a good compression algo for the audio to give a quick direct stream....

Agreed, we need to post more info about ourselves online.

Why 'in my neighbourhood'?
I thought the whole point of this interweb thing is that it is meant to abolish space?
Or am I confusing it with the Hadron collider?
