storage for vinyl records.. suggestions

Post by nuxnamon » Sat May 18, 2013 1:11 am

due to lack of space and kids/wife, my friend is giving me his record collection. We packed it yesterday and we have a total of 31 full bins as pictured below.. this is in addition to my 6 bins.. so a total of 36 bins full of vinyl..

I've looked at the Ikea expedit and wondering if anyone has experiences with stability.. i mean i've seen nice record collections on expedits on the web,

this guy using two 5x5 expedits.. i figure i need as much..

but i've also seen pics of expedits collapsing, especially the 5x5..

wondering if its better that i just get a bunch of the 4x2 expedits. will cost a bit more but maybe worth the stability..

any other ideas for vinyl storage?

None of the pictures that I have seen on the web with the Expedit falling over have holes ripped out of the walls.... So I'm guessing that these people did not secure their units to the wall properly or not at all.

Assemble the Ikea stuff well, and use Weldbond (strong carpenters glue) on every connection/ joint (inside & out) - sure it will take a hammer to take it apart.. but that is the point. Will not come loose with use, or get wobbly over time either.

Angle bracket the side uprights into the wall (either toggle bolts or at least ez-anchor).
Link to toggle bolts & ez-anchor for clarity:

Secure the top plate to the wall as well (ez-anchor or stud if you get lucky).

The unit will not fail then, and if done right - will never fall down or collapse.
2.8ghz Quad Mac, Live 9.77, Remote25, Maschine 1, Fa-66 optical link, Samson 65a. Dog hair.. lots.

Or better yet: get some wood, a saw and some brackets. Assemble.
