How/where to select specific external synth patches?

Hi all,

I've setup a midi track and have my EMU Synth (External) responding to it. Fine but how/where can I select a bank and specific patch from the EMU from within Ableton?

I'm coming from SONAR which used Instrument definition files (patch lists of hardware synths) and I could then select banks and patches from the choosers of the DAW midi track.


Any help?

I think you can set up patch and bank changes as properties of the MIDI clip. Since the session view is clip based, I guess it makes more sense that way. I've never actually done it though.

not on the track since it would mess up clip view, but every single midi clip can have program/bank changes

Dang how do they justify that operation? I mean surely the vast majority would use one sound per track rather then multiples on one track.

I don't get it. So if I wanted to have the same patch with numerous clips do I have to keep setting up patch selections for each new clip or duplicate clip and delete midi notation or something like that?

in session mode maybe, but in performance mode, i change sounds every scene

Yes I spose so. Makes more sense that way. I guess I forgot why they called it "Live"

But dang, I wonder if theres a workaround. Must investigate.

consolidate the clip on the track, put a program change, bingo

Well, part of the reason is that Live doesn't support Sysex messages. This is about as close to a Sysex message as Live will deal with. I suspect it was also implemented this way to keep the GUI less cluttered.

Works but clumsy as far as I can see.

Doesn't seem to select banks correctly. Wondering what is the difference between BANK & SUB. They both seem to have there own mind when it comes to bank selection...
