Would you pay for a known producer/DJ to review your music?

Post by cedricl » Fri Jun 07, 2013 12:48 pm

Getting your tracks heard by the right people in the music business is sometimes a challenge. So I was wondering if aspiring producers would be willing to pay for a track review by an established producer/DJ in the scene.

Thanks for the reply :-)

Don't think the question is stupid though. Pointblank charges for tuition but the most important part of the course is the feedback from the tutors on your assignments / tracks.

No is the answer. I've always thought music as well as mixing are a matter of taste. Just because a known producer reviews your music does not mean he could do better.

Sure, if you need to pay someone to tell you that your music sucks, go for it.

But for a small extra charge, they could tell you it's brilliant.

I may not be a big name producer, but I get lots of people each week who use me to consult on their tracks and give them feedback on things they could fix or improve. Seems to be pretty popular, I can't see anything wrong with it.

"Hey, famous DJ here ... Your technostep sounds great, the basses are bassy and the kick drums really kick, well done you!"

"Thanks ... So what now? Where do I collect my piles of money/women/drugs"

But that's 'track advice'. And I would pay for that. But that's different from a review. At least as I understand it.

Ok, I see what you mean. Yeah, that would be a little weird. What if they really didn't like it? Could they take your money and tell you it sucks and shouldn't even be heard by deaf people?

That might actually be a fun job....

If a given producer has serious chops and can give useful feedback for improving a track, then it might be worth paying for.

But lots of people give feedback away for free. In New York City I attended BMI and Ascap songwriting workshops for years, and the quality of the feedback was often stellar: when someone in the room says something that could clearly improve a song, usually everybody recognizes it and it's obvious that it could help in a rewrite. How that advice translates into a rewrite is up to the writer. I've seen many mediocre songs re-written and made brilliant with good feedback, and I personally always seek feedback in my 30-year professional career writing for the musical theatre. Now more than ever. How a song lands on others, that is what matters to me.

It is more common for people to be able to give good structural feedback on lyrics than on music, but if you seek it out there are people who are brilliant at both.

It would depend on who it was and how much they were asking. In all likelihood, no. Hell no. Anyone who I would care to hear the opinion of would be way too expensive.
