The new Mac Pro
Re: The new Mac Pro
It's nice design, but I have three problems with it:
1.- The video card is too much, or not enough depending the aplication. Also, not user upgradable.
2.- The included HD would be very important, expanding it's internal HD's via PCIe SSD would be super expensive.
3.- It will be hella expensive.
For people who has invested in PCI cards, protools, UAD, rme, etc, could be pissed since the cost of tb cables plus the casing is a hard pill to swallow given what you will pay for this new Mac pro.

designed and assembled in the u.s. i dig that, a u.s. company manufacturing in the u.s. pretty crazy!!
i don't care what they say, a 6.6 inch fan....its going to be noisy.
looks like disk hard drives, are pretty much done for,
as well as firewire.

Re: The new Mac Pro
From the people who brought you the G4 Cube, the err... Tube???
Re: The new Mac Pro
You will be able to add hard drives with external products Apple will bring out plugged into the thunderbolt 2 ports. There will be no GPU upgrades or internal PCI-E or ability to add anything internal.

Re: The new Mac Pro
To be consequent they should have invented a round shaped ssd that one can connect underneath the 'Tube' Round design is cool...

Re: The new Mac Pro
Love the design and very pleasing on the eye - unfortunately I will looking from a distance as I would fully imagine I will be priced out of even thinking about getting one. As someone mentioned, even getting current peripheral devices interfacing with it alone would put you off. I know they are trying to move people to new technologies, but would it have hurt that much to get a single FW800 port in there?
Re: The new Mac Pro
All expansion is external which is great if you think about it...
Lot's of Thunderbolt ports and USB3 and HDMI ports...
Will be really, really fast...
Won't be cheap...

From what I've read the GFX cards are user upgradable, it's just that they're a new form factor, so you won't be able to use PC Cards with hacks. Nvidia cards will be offered as well, and cheaper cards most likely, they're just trying to sell it as the most powerful thing ever (who the fi puck needs to drive so many 4K displays. Plus the GFX cards they're talking about isn't even released yet (same with thunderbolt 2), I reckon you'll see more options when they're set for release plus logic X to be released before the new operating system

you'd be surprised... typically, the larger the fan the quieter.eddiex wrote:i don't care what they say, a 6.6 inch fan....its going to be noisy.

less rotations = less noise
larger blades = more air
RIP firewire
so glad that my iMac has TB and FW.
Re: The new Mac Pro
If you can afford a new Mac Pro then the 29 euro for a Firewire adapter won't be an issue I suppose...

I wonder what the price will be. I know it won't be cheap but maybe it might be "Mac cheap". They might have cut some costs in making it smaller and somewhat taking the "Mac mini" approach to doing a desktop but Im guessing a base model would start anywhere from $2250 to $2400 (assuming they have cut costs some vs the older Mac Pro).
If it turns out to be "Mac cheap" it would probably go for about $2000 base but I don't see that happening at all since they didn't pull many punches on this box and is going for all new cutting edge technology.
The cost will be more than the box itself (as what my lesson was with the Mac mini). These type of boxes come with very little in terms of DVD drives, External Hard drives, Facetime camera etc, so I had to spend a little more on that type of stuff for the mini, and while Thunderbolt and USB 3 are very fast, you will run out of ports quickiy on modern computers and will need to invest in a good hub.
Some of the omissions will help keep the costs from going to a new Mac level of high, but yeah I don't see the sticker price being too pretty, but at the same time I doubt there will be much difference in price from the old Mac Pros current price vs the new Mac Pros.
