Max4Live crashing during tutorials..

I've been trying to learn max4live but it randomly crashes when doing the tutorials or opening reference files, sometimes it crashes when just moving message boxes or objects around in the patcher. It also takes around 30-45 seconds just to open the device editor. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? I'm using Ableton 9 with Max 6.1.1 on Vista.
