ever notice how older people are stuck in a certain decade..

Post by nathannn » Wed Jun 19, 2013 3:49 pm

when in comes to music?

I just noticed for the last couple of months I have been stuck in the 00's
Everything I feel like listening to lately comes from the early 00's
Im currently stuck on Radioheads first two albums of the decade, thrice, saves the day, at the drive in & bear vs shark

I usually like new music but all the current bands sound like they are going for the Little house on the Prairie theme song, or trying to sound like the theme from Bonanza.

I am 33 years old now.. maybe this is around the age we start getting comfortable with an era of music and just stay there?
The Push / Novation Launch Pad / Novation Launch Pad Pro / Novation Launch Key
/ Launch Control XL / Machine MkII / Machine Studio / BeatStep / Livid OhmRGB / Livid Code V2 / Apc 40 MKII

no computers or synths

20 Copies of Ableton Live Lite.

90s for me. The music, the equipment, the business, I guess being in my 20s then too. It was the future.

Maybe it does have to do with being in my 20's through the 00's idk
I always thought people got stuck musically in their teens but for me I cant listen the music I listend to in my teens (typical angry 90's teen/20's music)

My listening tastes and my recently played list cover the previous years pretty evenly. But I've not got a massive interest in what's been happening in the last 5 or 10 years. Producers seem to be making loop music that was innovative in '93 and just obsessing about production, it's that or creaky voiced faux emotion ballads over an ironic mandolin. I've not really found too much recently that appeals to me as innovative, evocative and got a groove of some kind.
YMMV

Recently played includes : Low fidelity altars - how to operate with a blown mind, Soft Cell - Torch, Musique - keep on jumpin' , NIN - a warm place, Bowie - Right, Zappa - Black Napkins, Alman Brothers - Whipping post, Soft Moon - Parallels, Grace Jones - Well Well Well dub, Atoms for Peace - Judge jury executioner

only two of them are from the last 3 years.

I’m 40 and wouldn’t say I’m stuck musically in any decade. I’ll listen to just about anything from the 30’s up to current. It’s all about the mood I’m in or want to be in. Certainly some music gives me more experience based nostalgia but I’m not stuck or think the music I was listening to in my 20’s was the best music ever produced. In fact the music from that time period in my life I listen to the least.

Yeah, the 30's are a good starting point.

The 1230's, that is.

This is what i was talking about when I said current bands sound like they are trying to sound like The little house on the prairie or bonanza theme song.
I remember watching the Arcade fire on PBS and seeing a girl in the band play something that looked like an old washing machine. This thing had a crank and strings.

The music and movies from the 30’s through the 50’s made life seem much more pleasant and manageable. Of course that is bullshit, but at least they had the good taste to keep their discontent to themselves. :x

Although it would be interesting to see what they would be bitching about on the internet if they had it way back then, much like today’s internet opinions and bitching will seem absurd 50 years from now.
