Reaktor - presets nd snapshots

Post by twinstates » Sat Jun 22, 2013 12:06 pm

Hi, Not strictly ableton related but this is the best music forum I know of for geed technical advice so pls excuse the OT :)

I have made a bunch of presets with one of the reaktor modules, saves them using the save preset command (was watching a tutorial a while back and the guy suggested this was a good way of doing it instead of saving as a snapshot - it;s definitely not as browsing means you have to reload each one and that takes time).

Anyway, every time I try to load one of these presets into reaktor it takes me out of the ensemble and loads the one up that the preset corresponds to. Just to be clear it's the same ensemble.

So, what i am trying to do is to get the sound is saved as a preset into a snapshot bank so I can set up a bank of bass sounds, chords sounds etc.
It keeps on loading a new ensemble each time which isn't good because I need to open that preset into the local copy of the ensemble so I can build up the snapshot bank.
I am wondering if anyone has a workaround or can shed some light on this. Stupid to listen to some guy on the internet when i had a prefectly good working method :(

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give!

I think I have found the solution!

If anyone else is struggling with this.

The save as preset system is really awful

NI could do with shaping up Reaktor to address the way it all works as it's unnecessarily complicated to get from a saved preset to saving as a snapshot in a bank...

yeah, it's an extremely clunky system and NI have needed to address this years, IMO. the whole thing about not overwriting factory ensembles and having to create copies / getting 'save as' dialogs all the time, when all you've done is turn a knob, is just absurd. I get that if you change the -inside- of an ensemble, it makes sense to re-save it as something different -- but just tweaking the settings? seems silly to me.

these days I just rack everything and store sounds I'm using as ableton racks, rather than deal with reaktor's internal management system.

I thought of that, but figured that if you are doing that it forces you to reload the ensemble each time, no?

Yes the problem is that if you have multiple instances of Reaktor open, with the same ENS loaded, you have to be careful not to make changes to both versions as there is no easy way to merge them afterwards e.g. if you create a new snapshot in both.

Unless perhaps the new snapshots could be saved in a new bank, and then could be loaded into a new ensemble, selected, and then saved to the desired location.
