more powwwwwwwer!

Post by devinschumacher » Tue Jun 11, 2013 4:03 am

im working on a really big sounding synth. (maybe something along the style of the lead in justice genesis to give you an idea of what im going for?)

im working off an ableton bass preset and its starting to sound good. i feel like i need more power behind it, or width, or grind?

i was thinking i might need some 3rd party vsts to help put some Umpf behind it.. camelphat? sausage phattener? anyone know any vsts i should take a look at that might accomplish this?
thanks all!

Sausage Fattener is pretty dope. One everything from leads to drums.
EQ the piss out of it.
YouTube widening sound with Ableton.
There's this trick I've read about but have yet to put into practice. Cliff Notes version is same synth and notes, two different tracks. Utility on each. Settings opposite of each other. Bluh bluh bluh. Don't forget to LFO the bejesus out it too.
Here's a bit of advice I learned the hard way; when it sound good, SAVE IT!!!! That way when you have your hand up her skirt tweaking this and that and shit goes bonkers, you can always revert back to that saving point.
I can't tell you how many times I was in the zone and made some goofball tweaks and a beautiful patch turned into a mud puddle of shit.

I've never heard that utility trick. I will definitely try that ---- and yeah I'm all about saving synths for sure. I think the hardest part as an artist is creating a distinct sound, whether that be from synths or BPM or whatever it is. I'm getting close to having a couple good saved sounds but they just aren't quite there yet. Got a ton to learn still.

Ableton's stock sound/preset sounds all unexiting and dull for my taste. You could chain bunch of effects to make it exiting, but it is more easy and gives depth of modulation if you could make pleasing sound from the generator level. I think 3rd party synths always provide such user experience, faster workflow.

This is something else I was kind of realizing today as well. I think I really need to spend a few weeks studying massive.... I don't have enough $$ to buy the synths I want (trillion, nexus)

Find a second hand copy of Komplete 8. I think I gave like $350 for my copy. Hadn't even been registered.

If you have a copy of Massive now, look into learning envelope modulation. That's the tits.

I have massive and kontakt. Kontakt is good for big band sounds but not really for grime... Or if it is I haven't used it that way yet

Check out www.pluginguru.com. That dude has a pretty cool expansion pack for Massive. I bought it and it really helped me understand the dynamics of automating parameters.
Also, I received an email today that he's coming out with a drum pack generator GUI thingy for Kontakt that looks pretty bad ass.
I've mentioned this on several threads pertaining to synth programming, if you have a smartphone or tablet, get a YouTube downloader! I can't express how big a learning tool this can be. You watch a video you learn from, download it. It's also worth it's weight in gold by saving all the time of having to pause and switch widows to make parameter changes.
