The Amen Break and Golden Proportion

Post by jbodango » Sun Jun 30, 2013 8:18 pm

Interesting essay on one possible reason why the Amen Break is so popular...

I've turned the Amen Beat's waves vertically and put them next to the levels of the human body. It seems to me that the popularity of the Amen Break must have something to do with this appearance of the Golden Ratio in its timing structure.

Bullshit

He's talking nonsense. First up "The "Amen Break" is 5.20 seconds long in four bars", well, if you want to include the horn strike at the start it is, but OK, four bars then. OK, Lets work with the full 4 bar sample ...

Lets take a look at the image he uses, and compare to the actual Amen Break

Image

HUH :?:
These don't seem to match up at all. What is this?
What I first noticed in the wave picture are the distinct peaks representing the beat. I considered the biggest peaks near each end as the limits of a whole.
Weird, but OK if that's how you want to determine a bar, rather than .. y'know, via the bar length. But lets go with his weird system.

To a musician what he calls "the biggest peaks near each end" , is what we know as "the snare" His start marker is actually the first snare in the bar Boom Boom Chick, his end is even more weirdly the second to last beat. Making a loop length in bar terms NOT of 1.0.0 but instead provides a loop duration of 1.1.2 . A bar, a quarter and an eighth. Now his maths and arbitrary divisions start to make sense.

What he doesn't mention is that when he was trying desperately to get his pet fetish to match up , the only place it seemed to work was from start:3.2.0 to end :4.4.3

This is nonsense, unless you consider that this dude will go to any lengths to prove a cosmic connection to his pet stoner theory.

Beats naturally subdivide mathematically. It's why its a beat.

Are you telling me that beats can be divided as 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16th? Get outta here! :P
