BeatChopLive - Real time Slice to Midi [Share]

Post by jrs1 » Thu Jul 25, 2013 10:23 pm

Hi Guys,

I have just finished a new device. Demo vids below explain the possibilities better than the text.

---BeatChopLive---
A MaxforLive device that performs real-time 'Slice to Midi' on internal or external audio.

Designed as a production tool to speed up workflow and as a live tool for jamming with other musicians or a DJ.

Grab the other person's audio, slice it and play/'remix' along with them.

Features:
- Sample and playback Live clips or incoming audio/turntable/band instantly.
- Midimap or midi note triggers. Up to 16 pads or 3 octaves on a midi keyboard.
- Internal tap tempo, note repeat, gate.
- Change pitch/time independently (grainstretch) or simultaneously (turntable style).

Note - This device uses the Win & Mac External grainstretch~ by Time Rozendal. This should be automatically included in the download file here (device has been frozen). Otherwise, DL here:

Ok, I have now uploaded an extra MIDI device.

Place on a MIDI track and then you can trigger the BeatChopLive audio pads with a MIDI Clip or sequencer of your choosing (instead of midi-map).

Thank you for writing comments in your patch, that's very useful.

I think writing comments in the patch was one of the longest things ;-) Definitely an extra hour of work.

But, I also did it for myself if I want to re-visit /re-use the code in the future.

Hey jrs I love this thing. Havent had a chance to use the midi input yet but I look forward to it. I had a minor suggestion though.

When you press record it seems to start feeling each buffer slot, it's kinda slow and if you try and start playing the pads before it's full you sometimes get empty slots. If the device kept a constant buffer then when you pressed REC it could then load whats in the buffer instantly. Just a thought.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

Yes please. This looks like an awesome and creative tool. Would love to see this for Push.

Would it be a device that would hijack default Push? Much like "because789's" Parameter Masher.

Very much interested. How would you see a Push version working?

Would more buttons mean higher resolution? Or would more rows control more instances?

Push version will take a while as it's all quite new for me and not much time at the moment.

Presumably Push can be used in MIDI MAP mode(?), therefore you can in theory use the existing device with Push.

You can get 16 pads using the MIDI IN module. You have to set what Midi note should trigger what.

Hi,

I can't get MIDI to work with BCL. Here are my issues:

1) I can assign the 8 trigger pads to pads on my MIDI device when BCL is used on a MIDI track, but not when it is used on a audio track. If BCL is used on audio track, how can I assign those pads to MIDI device?

2) I downloaded the BCL_MIDI device and set it on an empty MIDI track, but how can it control BCL when BCL is set up on an audio track with the clip that I want to play? BCL_MIDI does not send any MIDI data to BCL located on an audio track. Let me know if there's a workaround or if I misunderstood how it works.

The MIDI mapping part doesn't seem to be present in your video tutorials.

Thanks in advance!

@locojohn

re question 1)
--Actually the midi mapping should work with the main BCL device on an audio track. Maybe try deleting all BCL plugins from your set, then just draggin a new one to an audio clip, then try midi mapping.

re question 2)

actually the BCL midi in should automatically communicate to the main BCL plugin on the audio track. if you click the MIDI in button on the main BCL plugin, a window will open that should show you the incoming midi.

I will try and create a video that explains how to set it all up.

there is a help button with some instructions too (but maybe it doesn't cover everything.
