fingertap on your desk while listening to your beat. record that with the inbuilt mic of your laptop. extract groove. throw groove into a midi channel, select appropriate percussive sound.

Layer, pan, automate, reverse, side-chain, destroy, cuddle.

Oh, and use Japanese percussive sounds.

I tried this, and it has proved to be very useful indeed! However, there is an obstacle, that of my drum beat always having a white noise that at first seems inconsequential, but really affects my midi notes. Would you recommend a higher quality microphone of sorts? And if so, what kind would you recommend? This white-noise isn't just in Ableton, I've tested it all over the place and this noise is unshakable. Solutions?

Good thread, all I'll add is if you are going for something complicated then it's rarely one draft with one technique. Complicated/abstracted results are reached by degrees by applying successive simpler ideas on top of each other.

On the other hand try using rhythmic cliches with classic drum sounds and focusing on your bassline and other elements, maybe thats where you need focus?

variations don't have to be large to have impact. take out a kick drum or a high hat. layer a long release 808 under a kick on a new bar every whole note i like to put lfos and delays on things to change it up. just do something to make it different every so often.

Convert hit song melodies to high hats - as best you can. Use open hat for emphasised words, e.g. "Help me if you can I'm feeling down" becomes:

t t t-t tssst t t-t tssst t-t.

Adjust volumes of each hit until you get a good groove. Really gets you out of the straight 8th and straight 16th mindset. 8)
