playing with 808 on PUSH

Post by Badger45 » Sat Sep 28, 2013 12:11 pm

Forgive me as I am totally new to Abes and push as well and feeling a bit overwhelmed. I can hear what music I want to create but it is a sloooow process with the learning curve. Ive been watching a lot of tutorial on youtube but cant find this. What I am trying to do is get a playable 808 either in drum rack or preferably note mode where I can play the 808 sample in different varying pitches such as in a lot of rap and RnB. DEEP bass that I can play almost as an instrumental bass line. If anyone could walk me through the best way to map this to push I would greatly appreciate it! Wanting to incorporate this into my tracks. Someone mentioned sampler but I am truly a noob and not sure how to do this. The more detailed you can be the better. Thanks so much!

You're definitely not alone with this, there are so much things to learn, it just doesn't happen over night.

For what you want to do it looks as you are on the right track with Sampler. To learn what this instrument does, I'd recommend to start here:

https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/live- ... e/#sampler

You can find many tutorials on how to work with Sampler on youtube, too. In my opinion the quickest way to learn that device is to build a track with some Samplers and not more than 2-3 samples. If you spend a couple of hours with this task you'll get a solid understanding of what the instrument is capable of (A LOT).

Just browsing a couple vids...thinking these type of methods might be a good way if I make 20 of the same sample....but wondering how exactly I vary the pitch and save them

Get a good 808 kick sample. If you have Live 9 then there is a very good 808 kit that comes in the library.

Drop an empty drum rack into the session view.

Navigate to "samples" in the browser and search 808 classic kick.

Drop as many as you like into the drum rack cells.

Push "device" on the PUSH and one of the pre-mapped macros will be "transpose."

Transpose all the kicks to whatever key you like and play them.

~or~

Use a simple sine wave in Operator and transpose it down to -12 or -24.

play w/ the envelopes. An 808 kick is just a sine wave w/ modulated amp envelope.

Cool! Any idea how many points apart the drums should be on transpose setting? 4 apart, 5 apart, or 6?
