Looking to buy new laptop

Post by tedlogan » Wed Oct 16, 2013 10:28 am

Hello

I currently use a 4 year old desktop, first gen i7 at 2.6ghz, 6 gig RAM, 1TB 7200rpm HD, Windows Home Premium 7 64 bit, and a Nvidia GTX295. I switch between using my Pod HD desktop guitar unit and an Edirol UA25 for an audio interface. Latency could be better, but it's OK for now.

I wanna go mobile as I like sitting elsewhere in the house at times, and every 2 weeks I go to a friend's place for the weekend to jam a bit. In December I'm visiting Cape Town in South Africa to see my family. Quite a few friends there would like to see Push in action too. So a few OK reasons to get one.

I find it hard to choose what to get, and how much to spend. So many option. I do not want a MacBook. All pre-configured laptops always have some glaring omission, or they're very overpriced. So then I started looking at PCSpecialist.co.uk, but then the laptops I was interested in all seem to have insanely loud fans, still not fixed according to the forums there. Then I came across Utopia Computers, who are a little bit more expensive, but seem to have a better reputation. This is the kind of system I'm looking to get

It's just over a grand, but well-specced I think. For those who don't like clicking on links, the specs are:

4th gen i7 quadcore 2.4ghz
8 GIG corsair 1600mhz DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M - 2GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX 11
HD 1 = 250GB SSD
HD 2 = 500GB SATA
Will most likely run Live 9 in 32 bit - VSTs don't play ball that well in 64 bit mode. I'm aware of JBridge, haven't tried yet though.

I will also be resuming my 3D animation/modeling/rigging studies early next year, mainly using Autodesk Maya and ZBrush 4 etc.

What do you guys think? Any advice is much appreciated.
