Nice comfortable headphone for listening

Post by re:dream » Thu Sep 26, 2013 1:46 pm

Hi there

I am looking for a headphone I can just use to listen to music with. In other words, this is not a pair of cans for mixing.

What I want is

- NOT in ear
- Good quality
- Comfortable & light
- Open (i.e. admitting ambient noise)
- Not too insanely pricy.

Any ideas?

I can vouch for the Grado SR80i. I have a pair that I use periodically at work. Time passes easily.

Just go all out and get some Sennheiser HD-650's

I know they are expensive but they are super comfortable, great for listening, and great for mixing and master reference. Plus they are super tough and will last you for many many many many years to come.

it really depends on the size and shape of your head. my head finds HD600/650s uncomfortable.

I am using those at the moment at work and they're good, but not as comfortable as my usual AKG K-271 MKII. The edge of the pad that is contact with your head on the Beyerdynamics is a bit narrower than with the AKGs. But different heads, different strokes, as it were...

I've been using a pair of the DT-990 PROs for production and general listening for a few months now and really like them. The mid-range frequencies seem slightly under emphasized, but maybe that's just because of the better low and high end response compared to my other crap cans. Note that they have a coiled cord -- I start to feel the tug of the cord when I get about 6 feet away from where they're plugged in. I find them very comfortable and can use them for hours without fatigue.
