push encoders to control external instrument automation

I'm new to push, trying to work out how to map push to control a external instruments automation (reason combinator).
have found a m4l device that lets you map pitch and mod wheel but i really want to map combinator rotarys and record the automation.
If some one could point me in the right directiion
