South Africa was a fantastic opportunity for socialist revolution, but the ANC did not take the opportunity. They sought to do it in stages, Stalinist-style. And this always leads to disaster. It did in Chile in 1973, it did in Indonesia in 1965, Spain in 1937. It has done many times. It wasn't a complete wipe-out in SA - the tide was impossible to turn back - but it was a golden opportunity thrown down the toilet. A Marxist leadership would have strolled into power. Mandela was not a Stalinist though, to my knowledge.

Will post more later, but it's been an interesting few days for South Africa. A big process for us as a whole, and one of the moments when we feel like 'a nation'. (The last other time was when South Africa beat France during the world cup).

On Friday I think everyone was rather stunned by the news. A feeling of solemnity in the air and a real feeling of loss...

I spent the last four days in the mountains at a dance festival.

South Africans of all races coming together to dance to overamplified electronic music.

Images of Mandela everywhere: on people's t-shirts, in food stalls.

People pinned his picture up in their car windows.

At 5 pm on Saturday afternoon a friend of mine, he DJs under the name Connecto, played a 3 hour progressive trance set interwoven with samples from his speeches... people stopped dancing and stood with their hands in the air or linked arms... i got goose bumps. People said One Love and meant it.

Then it went back to the usual mayhem and debauchery but it was pretty awesome while it lasted.

He was only a man and not a saint, and he was not the Yoda-meets-Mahatma-Ghandi figure popular culture makes him out to be. But he did save us from civil war. He started the armed struggle, and he ended the war.

We were privileged to have him.

His dignity and grace were a gift to us all.

We will miss him
