Just to annoy you:leisuremuffin wrote:Trees aren't a symbol of a nation
"A national symbol is an animal, tree, flower or object which serves as a designated abstract representation a nation." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_trees)

Re: Nelson Mandela
So why didn't you choose to post a picture of the current flag, which was chosen when Mandela was released from prison? As far as me spamming the thread, no problem, I have shit to do, I'll be gone for the day, the place is all yours for at least 10 hours. Have fun.

I already explained why. Do try and keep up. Plus, the current SA flag is an eyesore.leisuremuffin wrote:So why didn't you choose to post a picture of the current flag
Re: Nelson Mandela
To have a serious discussion, you must first have a serious topic, and Marxism simply doesn't qualify.
But here's a little photoshop of Mandela with Marx's beard, ftw:
EDIT: I added NYAN cat behind him, because the previous background was a tad drab.

You're an idiot. And you're also a dick for plugging your mindless crap on an RIP thread. Give it a rest.

You're just sore you lost the omelette debate.Funk N. Furter wrote:No, it's the fact that you know you don't have a leg to stand on so you will never debate anything serious with me. People like (right wingers) you supported apartheid, generally speaking.
South Africa was a fantastic opportunity for socialist revolution, but the ANC did not take the opportunity. They sought to do it in stages, Stalinist-style. And this always leads to disaster. It did in Chile in 1973, it did in Indonesia in 1965, Spain in 1937. It has done many times. It wasn't a complete wipe-out in SA - the tide was impossible to turn back - but it was a golden opportunity thrown down the toilet. A Marxist leadership would have strolled into power. Mandela was not a Stalinist though, to my knowledge.

Re: Nelson Mandela
Will post more later, but it's been an interesting few days for South Africa. A big process for us as a whole, and one of the moments when we feel like 'a nation'. (The last other time was when South Africa beat France during the world cup).
On Friday I think everyone was rather stunned by the news. A feeling of solemnity in the air and a real feeling of loss...
I spent the last four days in the mountains at a dance festival.
South Africans of all races coming together to dance to overamplified electronic music.
Images of Mandela everywhere: on people's t-shirts, in food stalls.
People pinned his picture up in their car windows.
At 5 pm on Saturday afternoon a friend of mine, he DJs under the name Connecto, played a 3 hour progressive trance set interwoven with samples from his speeches... people stopped dancing and stood with their hands in the air or linked arms... i got goose bumps. People said One Love and meant it.
Then it went back to the usual mayhem and debauchery but it was pretty awesome while it lasted.
He was only a man and not a saint, and he was not the Yoda-meets-Mahatma-Ghandi figure popular culture makes him out to be. But he did save us from civil war. He started the armed struggle, and he ended the war.
We were privileged to have him.
His dignity and grace were a gift to us all.
We will miss him
peace

Re: Nelson Mandela
Jacob Zuma is our very own version of Silvio Berlusconi. Smart, greedy, slippery, and utterly shameless. He's not going to change.
But it's a significant event, particularly so close to the 2014 elections. I think the ANC is nervous. They are going fight dirty in the next few months, I think
