Midi Editor "smart" snap-give us an option to turn it off!
Re: Midi Editor "smart" snap-give us an option to turn it off!
Now that I've begun physically pressing my finger onto a giant note, and tried to align it on the grid, I admit. This is a severe pain in the ass.
It barely gives leeway for a default of On-the-grid.
1. When people are moving notes, they often times expect them to snap to grid. There is an exception where you can have grid off, which still gives you vague indications of where the grid is. This is the only time I'd Expect to be able to not snap by default. Otherwise, Live can't read my mind.
2. If I wanted a loose humanized feel, I could apply a groove. The funny thing about grooves is that they Probably work best when used in conjunction with quantized notes......... Instead you're dealing with sloppily unquantized notes, and then adding a groove.
I don't think I should have to highlight every other note and hot Ctrl+u just because I'm not totally sure it slid in line with the grid. I should feel Confident about the functionality.
At the end of the day, I don't care if they 'fix' this, but it'd be a nice workflow improvement

Please make it an option, so I can turn it off, and never encounter it again.

I would also like to turn it off, or I'd rather like to have a 'strength' amount because I think I'd be alright with smart snap if it wasn't so 'loose', if that makes sense.
If I didn't want smart snap at all, I'd turn the strength down to zero. The higher the strength amount, the less the note will try to snap when it's close to a grid line.

Just hold CMD (OSX) and drag the notes so that tempoary disables quantisation ?
Re: Midi Editor "smart" snap-give us an option to turn it off!
You have it the wrong way - we want an option to turn off the "sloppy snap" feature altogether, because it results in accidental imprecise notes and excessive time trying to make notes snap to the grid.ansolas wrote:Just hold CMD (OSX) and drag the notes so that tempoary disables quantisation ?
What we want : a hard snap
What I like: using a modifier key to temporarilly disable snapping.
What I don't like: having snapping be unpredictable.
We want to turn off sloppysnap, if you like it that's great. It should be there for you. But for those of us who prefer the old "in time notes" method, with a modifier, we need to be able to turn off sloppysnap.

You don't even need to hold cmd.
Because Live does not snap. Anyone that wants notes to align on the grid has to hover the note back and forth a bunch of times.
When a person wants snapped notes, it should be the easiest and most obvious thing to do.

To be fair to the developers the auto-unsnapper has become less buggy as the point versions have gone by. Many bugs have died, because it used to lose the grid if you dragged upwards, or changed the zoom size, among other things. They have fixed many issues with it. When it first came out I was forever finding notes in drum clips there were slightly displaced from the grid. That rarely happens these days thankfully.
However, it doesn't stop it being ultra-weird that it's not an option. I still press the Alt key when dragging off the beat, because if I want off-time notes the new system is too "magnetic". It's still easier to use the old Alt key method.

Hey Ableton. What about this issue? Nothing happening? This "smart" function sucks so much
Re: Midi Editor "smart" snap-give us an option to turn it off!
I'm new to Ableton and thought this was a bug. I thought I was going crazy as the snap to grid was on yet when I dragged with the mouse it was off... but then would work after a wiggle around...
Found this thread and am relieved it's not just me that hates this and would like an option implemented. I won't hold my breath tho... this thread was started on Nov 2013

This needs to be fixed ASAP. It's a real pain to work with.
