name some band you like that no-one else has ever heard of

Post by slatepipe » Mon Jan 27, 2014 11:24 am

i was lisnin' to the wolfgang press at the weekend. i've totally loved them for years and i was thinking about how many people i've mentioned them to and just been met with a 'who the fuck are they?' type comment and blank expression. there only seems to be me and a couple of mates who've ever heard of them.

anyway, it got me thinking, what's the story with people here? what's the band that you know and love but no other feller has ever heard of? i'm always interested in hearing obscure shit that other people enthuse about :)

here's some wolfgang press anyway :

this extended remix of their 'kansas' single is one of the best pieces of dub/funk/dance/noise i've ever heard :

Excellent idea for a thread, Mr Pipe.

The Wolfgang Press reminded me of obscure New Zealand indie bands - all on Flying Nun Records - which I used to listen to in the 90s.

Here's a list from the Wales-New Zealand axis of obscurity:

Bailter Space
Straitjacket Fits
Chris Knox
Snapper
Y Niwl
McLusky
Datblygu

Apologies if you've heard any of these before...

Fat Freddy's Drop. Not that obscure (esp if you're from NZ) but worth a mention here I think. Vocalist Joe Dukie is excellent IMO.

Probably not that unheard of, particularly in the U.K. But no-one I know has ever heard of these guys, I got the LP below in my collection when I was younger somehow, I think it may have been my brothers... these guys are crazy:

Yeh, behind a plant. I do not see the connection with the rovo music, but that is up to you. For me the rovo sound like early "sequencer" music.

In fact i was looking for a group called "de fabriek" when i found the "lp fabriek". so i had a listen to the "lp fabriek" and they reminded me willem breuker, hence.

But here is the "real" fabriek, from Zwolle.

Jacob Miller (May 4, 1952 – March 23, 1980) was a Jamaican reggae artist, who first recorded with Clement Dodd. While pursuing a prolific solo career, he became the lead singer for reggae group Inner Circle with whom he recorded until his death in a car accident at the age of 27.
