Help Using TouchAble/Lemur Without WIFI
Help Using TouchAble/Lemur Without WIFI
I'm going on a 3 week long vacation and will be in a hotel room for that time with limited space. I'd like to mess around with Ableton and use my iPad as a MIDI controller but I'm sure connecting a WIFI app to talk to my computer would be useless.
With that said, I'd like to know if there's any way I can connect an app like TouchAble 2 or Lemur through USB or FireWire/Thunderbolt/whatever directly from my iPad to my laptop.
I've seen things like the Alesis IO dock and heard of using the camera connection kit for things like touch osc but don;t know if that would apply to the two apps I mentioned above. So for those who are good with this stuff, is it possible to wire one of these apps in instead of using WiFI? If so how so? Thank you for taking the time to answer my question!
BTW I'm using a 2013 Macbook Pro Retina (Mavericks), Live 9.1.1, and using the iPad Air (which utilizes a different charger/connector than the previous iPads.

Does your iPad have internet sharing as a personal hotspot in Settings?

Thanks for your reply. I just went through all the sub-tabs in the settings of the iPad and did not see any type of Internet Sharing option.yur2die4 wrote:Does your iPad have internet sharing as a personal hotspot in Settings?

Use an Ad-hoc network
Re: Help Using TouchAble/Lemur Without WIFI
Wouldn't that still require a WiFi connection?infernal.machine wrote:Use an Ad-hoc network

I believe personal hotspot is only available of you have the cellular version of iPad. And even then if you do not have a service it may need I be unlocked or some garbage.
Anyway, that is the primary way to 'tether' a connection without using wifi. It works the same as wifi except as you'd expect, has the strong reliability.
Still, having a Mac (you didn't mention your OS on the initial post), the adhoc wifi method might not be so bad. I've seen plenty of people use it seemingly effortlessly. Just make sure your network card doesn't take a nap.

Adhoc should work well, but if youve jailbroken theres mywi also (you can tether by usb).

no, you cannot create a personal hotspot using a wifi-only iPad.
Re: Help Using TouchAble/Lemur Without WIFI
Correct, but you can of course connect to a personal hotspot. I understood the question the other way around...fishmonkey wrote:\jesQuick wrote:Nope, works perfectly fine on wifi only iPads.yur2die4 wrote:I believe personal hotspot is only available of you have the cellular version of iPad.

Wouldn't you want the laptop to be the master and touchable/iPad the slave? Perhaps it doesn't matter?!

yep. creating an ad hoc wifi network from the laptop is the way to go.jesQuick wrote:Correct, but you can of course connect to a personal hotspot. I understood the question the other way around...fishmonkey wrote:

if you are having signal and drop-out problems, try changing the channel that you are using, which you can choose when you create the ad hoc network.
also, something like the Wifi Explorer app makes it easier to see what other wifi traffic you are dealing with...
