MPK49 vs. Novation Launchkey 49
Right now my setup is just Ableton and Push, I had an M-Audio Oxygen 49 keyboard but it would be too expensive to ship it to my new place (plus I don't think M-Audio is all that great compared to other options). That being said Push is great for drums and live mixing but I could use some actual keys for notes and chords.
Between the MPK49 and the Novation Launchkey 49 which would be a better choice? Are there any others that I should consider?
Thanks.

How are the pads on the MPKs? I'm using Push so it's not that important but I've read mixed things about them.eddiex wrote:ive always liked the AKAI keys. i used to own the mpk49, now i have a mpk25. they have a nice feel to them.

I've read horrible things about the MPK pads, although I have no experience with them myself. I've got the Akai MAX 49 which has updated pads. They're pretty solid IMO.
Re: MPK49 vs. Novation Launchkey 49
I hate the keys and the pads on the mpk, but the new 249 version coming out looks promising. I would highly recommend trying one at a local shop before buying if you can.
Ableton 9, Feeltune Rhizome, Focusrite Pro, Mpk249....

I have the MPK61 with upgraded pads and sensitivity cork from MPCStuff.com

Whoa, had no idea about the 249. I think I'm going to wait for that to drop, I think it's coming out in May or something.cmreal04 wrote:I hate the keys and the pads on the mpk, but the new 249 version coming out looks promising. Thanks for all the feedback, other suggestions are still welcome.

the pads on my mpk49 were awful, but (i know it sounds weird) the ones on the mpk25 seem alright, but just alright. i know they are supposed to be the same as the mpc/mpd pads...but they don't feel the same.(just an aside about the pads, i know a lot of people bust on the akai pads, but i feel like a lot of people might not know that they are adjustable (both on the controller and in LIVE) they will NEVER be MASCHINE/PUSH pads, but they can be really good if you get your settings right) the keys are great though. and the build quality is pretty amazing too. plus, it's easy to use. i have the m-audio axiom 25...it's so complicated to adjust anything. plus, the knobs feel like you could break them off pretty easily....ive always liked the pads on the axiom.
it's all subjective though, and you should definitely try a few different keyboards out.
for me....the sturdiness of the akai mpk is what sold me, it felt like the keys/knobs/faders etc. were really well made (not too plasticy) the knobs/faders are sturdy and have smooth action. the mod wheels have a good feel. the keys are heavy, and don't feel like the springs are cheap or wore out. plus the MPK's are coming down in price, now that the newer models are coming out.
anyhow....good luck with your choice, i hope this helped a little.

Worth checking out the Novation Impulse. The clip launch facility isn't as good as the launchkey but it has a nice arpeggiator/step sequencer function and the pads have better feel IMO. Also the keys have aftertouch (which I'm not sure the Launchkey does). Costs more though.

There's the Alesis vi 49 coming out soon, if you'd rather have the drum pads repositioned.
Ableton 9, Feeltune Rhizome, Focusrite Pro, Mpk249....
Re: MPK49 vs. Novation Launchkey 49
launchkey does not have after touch.
you can get clip stop (like on launchkey) on impulse with my enhanced script (49/61 version).
also launchkey knobs are not endless.
I would really recommend looking at impulse.
Plus semiweighted keys give you more practice. Onca I had to be on the stage with weighted keyboard. Took me some time to adapt but probably I would not be able to do it if I was not using the impulse.
