who's going to pay for these chips?! the last thing we need is another social program to provide chips! it just isn't RIGHT!

Haliburton will build a pipeline to provide salsa to our soldiers during war time.

Half the reason I go to Mexican restaurants is for the free chips.

That low hanging fruit has already been plucked in this thread but I can’t even keep up with everything that has been said in here.

Good to hear Bill and Co is trying to do something about bringing more children into these situations. As far as I’m concerned they could be running the exact same aid commercial for my entire life. Show the kids. Maybe show a kid with their mother. Don’t show the men. That ranges from men are the cause of all this to men aren’t important to men don’t inspire donation giving. Marketing! :x

If your rant would have only been about the horrid emotional marketing, I would have ranted right along with you ;-)

For the record I haven’t been throwing middle fingers into the air every time a third world poverty aid commercial comes on, but something set me off watching a 15 minute segment on the latest round of impoverished. It’s nice to hear that at least Bill Gates shares my concerns but is a lot more tactful and proactive about it.

There was a large African village in Kenya (or was it Nigeria?) in which every kid got one of those free laptops at cost $99 or some shit a few years ago.

Doctors without borders made a huge effort and opened several successful clinics - providing services they'd never seen; including birth control.

Charities (secular and faith based) came in and built up new schools.

New farming techniques were adopted.

All of these efforts proved a fantastic success.

Until a neighboring warlord came in, chopped off the arms of children and working men, raped the women, and grabbed the teenage boys to serve as soldiers.

Ahh, the best laid plans....

Well maybe if the aid commercials put some real effort into showcasing past accomplishments instead of using the same stock footage year after year while claiming a dollar a day can accomplish the same shit it has for the past 30 years then I might be a little more sympathetic than numb. :x

At least the commercials stopped saying “for just the price of a cup of coffee a day” because nobody is going to commit to donating $150 a month. :x

So just to clear this up: Was your complaining the whole time about guilt trip advertisment for aid agencies, instead of the actual helping of people in need?! Or did you confuse guilt tripping advertisment with the News?! OR are the News now so bad where you live, that there is no difference anymore 8O

Genuinely curious.

I’m complaining because the impression that no matter the amount of aid it never has any lasting impact while the population of those in need of aid increases.

And that human nature demands the advertising exploitation of babies and kids in a crisis because nobody is going to donate to “this village of people in their 30’s needs your help!”

And our media is the worst. In summary “You live in the greatest country on earth. Now here’s 30 minutes of stories that totally contradicts that.”

I just need to remove Vice from my DVR series recording. The entire premise of the show is to scour the globe for fucked up situations and then show they are even more fucked up than you imagined. Another :x moment was a segment that featured new multimillion dollar power plants we built in Afghanistan that nobody is using because they lose money when they are running. But hey, I’m sure the contractors that built them got paid in full. :x

At this point, does it really matter? It's happening so often, in so many places, one only needs to throw a dart on a map and it's like 'oh, look. a massacre just happened there.'

I honestly could not be bothered to look it up...
