Ableton Max for Live production guidelines

Post by db » Tue Jan 11, 2011 7:26 pm

Hi all,

We've created set of Max for Live device guidelines. The purpose of these guidelines is to help programmers build devices that work and can be shared with others:

http://downloads.ableton.com/misc/maxfo ... elines.pdf

The guidelines are based on our own experience and known issues, the evaluations of some devices from the community and talks with patch programmers over the past few weeks.

We consolidated the most common errors to help you troubleshoot your devices. We'll add practical examples later to demonstrate how you may solve specific programming problems related to these guidelines.

I hope you find it helpful.

Cool stuff. I will certainly encourage people to adhere to the guidelines on maxforlive.com.

The new "beta/work in progress" tag could represent devices that don't confirm to all the recommendations in the guide.

Thanks Ableton!

Really nice checklist, this will really up the average device quality if people adhere to it. Thanks!

Howdy:

Could someone recommend some good patches that incorporate the guidelines?

I'm sure there are many of us who are crappy programmers and we could learn alot from looking into actual examples of solid code, rather than just blindly reading the guidelines. :)

Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks for the feedback. We're currently working on a few examples, they'll be coming out soon.

I would add to this list that a device's UI should play nice with alternative Ableton skins, for example a skin that's primarily black with white text as opposed to the standard grey with black text, the device should still be usable (ie parameters visible)
