other ways (than compression) to sidechain a synth parameter

this is something i've been wanting to do for years, and im sure some clever bean might know the answer.

does anyone know of a method for side-chaining a parameter within Live to another parameter, apart from using a compressor.

for example, is there a way to side-chain the cut-off frequency of a synthesiser to a the velocity of a percussive part? so that when the percussive part hits full velocity, the synth's filter will add a little wow to the synth... and the higher the velocity of the percussive part, the greater affect it has on the synth's filter.


or with the same idea, the ability to side-chain an effect parameter to another element... for example, a reverb's delay time is side-chained to the velocity of a bass synth.


it would be fun for adding some dynamic to a piece:)

I know with LFO Tool you can automate ccs but i wouldn't be surprised if there were a max4live device that can do this.

two ways,

1. use autofilter



2. use a send track with autofilter and some other effect like reverb etc.

I use a chain with an EQ8 into the m4l envelope follower, which can then be mapped to fun stuff.

The eq helps dial in the part of the sound you want to be the modulator.

Obligatory Clyphx post:

ClyphX contains (also free!!!) Macrobat. (It's automatically installed when you install Clyphx)

Macrobat lets you just rename a standard Live Rack to give it new functionality. One is the SideChain rack

The Manual says:

nK SIDECHAIN
The Macros on the Sidechain Rack can be connected to the output level of
the Track it is on.
RACK NAME:
The Rack’s name needs to start with NK SIDECHAIN.
MACRO NAMES:
To connect a Macro to the output level of the Track, the Macro’s name
needs to start with [SC]

EXTRA FUNCTIONS:
You can turn the sidechaining on/off with the Rack’s On/Off switch.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Each movement of a Macro is considered an
undoable action in Live. For that reason, when using a Sidechain Rack, you
will not be able to reliably undo while the sidechaining is in effect.

There is obviously no input-filtered side chaining here, but it's still very useful!

I think you basically just need a Max for Live device of the LFO variety, like this: http://www.maxforlive.com/library/device/354/device-lfo. But that was just the first one I found. There are many versions of this. Some look/work better than others. You can find the list here: here. Click "LFO" then sort by most downloads. That should get you close. Let us know if you find something you like! I'm interested in having this functionality too so I'll report back as well. Cheers!

out of curiosity, how long as autofilter had a side-chain input? i had never noticed it before!

Take a look at envelope follower. Ref do a max4live one as well.
