Enter Value On Envelopes...

Post by Regrind » Sat Oct 04, 2014 8:43 pm

It would be cool if when you're making adjustments to envelopes in clips or arrangement, if one were able to enter the desired value similar to the action in a simple value window. Ex: If I want to do a volume fade from -65db and gradually build to -6db. I find it hard at times to drag the position marker to the exact value and often settle for down the street in the neighborhood. Especially so when I'm relaying on the trackpad of the MBP. There is another example I had but am drawing a blank right now.

I'd like to see this, as well. It's possible to be more accurate when using the Ctrl (Cmd) key while dragging, but the ability to directly input a value would be... um... valuable.

I can hold CTRL all fuckin day long, I'm not going to drag the tempo right to 75.00. It will be 74.99 or 75.01. :/

I was baffled to discover the absence of text entry for automation, it seems like a garden-variety DAW feature after cutting my teeth on Cubase SX3.

Yea, I mean I don't see it as too much to ask. It doesn't seem like it would be that big of a coding hassle, but what do I know?

Yeah same. The more people that vote for features the more likely it becomes to be added to an update. If you go to the link a few posts up (the greater good), you can vote for these suggested features:

- Invert Envelope
- Double / Halve Length (so an 8th note arpeggiator envelope can become a quarter or 16th note one etc. Currently does not double/halve along with the clip)
- Snap to Grid (!)
- Type exact values into points
- Option to see other adjusted envelopes in the clip as greyed out lines while working on the selected one

I think those are very useful when editing automations and creating specific shapes. I really need Invert automation.

Ah yes, I saw it now. Your thread got my thoughts going, so I added the following comment there:

"Very good suggestions. I’ve been wanting more flexible envelopes since Live 6.

Also, for some parameters, it could help to enter things in percentages or harmonic intervals, like the pitch bend envelope.

The snapping could also work vertically when using the draw tool - there could be an option for whole numbers only, or only certain increments (5, 10, 15) or a certain scale. This, in combination with horizontal snapping would be fantastic!

I would also very much like to be able to apply smoothing, noise, or other cool edits to (a selection of) envelopes. Imagine being able to apply one operation to multiple envelopes!"

I just tried this in Bitwig, and you can enter a value for multiple automation points, and use the Spread parameter like EQ8's scale.
