Metrenome

Who believe in the metronome when in live performance or as an overall governor of musical thought, whom find the metronome as not necessary to the transcendent thought that might dip between 3/8, 4/4, and 4/16 time? Is this some sort of mannerist question who defies classicist thought, I'm just curious has mannerist music existed (1500 Italian 'classical music')? This is what we define as experimental, one that is not in the style of an accepted genre... not easy to define where are we?
