Using devices with CV, Gate, Sync In

Post by MarkH » Mon Oct 13, 2014 2:26 am

For all the years I've been active I've never taken the liberty to use such old school devices from Roland or Moog that do not support midi, and instead are equipped only with CV, Gate, S-Trig, Sync In, etc..

I took the leap and bought a Moog Source. Tony at Encore said he can retro-fit Midi In/Out by re-using the S-Trig ports and solder his Midi kit. What I'm trying to determine, based on other user experiences, is how much fun vs. pain in the ass it is using equipment in its original legacy form with Midi/CV conversion (and possibly chaining Sync or using Triggering from one legacy device to another), or is it a no brainer to retro fit Midi if it's an option? Surely adding midi functionality to a Moog Source, TR-808, or Jupiter 8 would make it easier to sequence note on/off, but I've seen a few guys working in the Midi > CV world and it's definitely and art and a science combined. It jut seems like a lot of work, like extreme sports mountain climbing. 8)

Just thought I'd get some feedback from anyone who's gone down this road with legacy hardware and what your final take on Midi retro fitting was. Much appreciated!

Thanks,
Mark

There are commercial products that convert midi to cv.

I did a quick search and found this thread (2007)

That was a couple of years ago so I'm guessing, 7 years later, that you will be able to find something that works for you.

Maybe it's a Kenton Midi-CV converter
