Per month and per year subscriptions for ableton

Post by jinek » Sun Oct 26, 2014 1:17 pm

It would be great if we do not have to buy Ableton, but could subscribe just like photoshop - its easier for users, because not so expensive as buying, And I think Ableton team would get new users - its good too.
Also users do not have to worry about upgrades - everyone could use latest version.

Upd. I don't mean replace the buying model, but add an ability to choose: Pay for version or pay for time.

Many people do not want to use the latest version. Many people don't want to keep paying and paying and paying. Absolutely no!

Dunno if I like this idea. I use Live every single day. A new Live only comes out what, every three years or so? Photoshop CC single app subscription is £210/year as an example, and I guess a Live Suite model would be similar in price. I'd be paying more (the upgrade to Live 9 only cost me around £239 to use FOREVER). Sure, they might update more regularly, but this is still not worth at least doubling (2 years subscription) (assuming a new Live version every 2 years which wasn't even the case with Live 9) what I paid for a one-off upgrade.

I hate these models.

I hate this idea.

No offense.

Basically, it depends on how often you're gonna use it. If regular, then you'll be paying more. If one-off, sure it's great, but most people probably don't use DAWs briefly and then stop. Or do they?

Sorry, you're naive.

Subscription models work a lot like subsided cellphones, over time you'll pay AT LEAST as much.
Also users do not have to worry about upgrades - everyone could use latest version.
... and not choose to sit out bugs until the next .1 release.

This is a worse idea than fixing pdc.

Guys, if you don't need it - just continue buying the full version, but why not to allow this to people who want pay per month?

This would require Ableton registering as a bank or credit union, it's not going to happen... Use wonga.com and do it that way...

Anyway, it's a real popular idea, so Ableton is sure to implement it.

It might make sense for those wanting to try Live and use VST's/Save Progress and have the ability to use Operator, Analog, Tension ETC.

but you should get serious or get OUT.

it'll start off as a hybrid a la cart system and the next thing you know it'll go all out because it's "easier" (aka more profitable) for Ableton, but will be marketed as though it's going to be better for us. no, no, no...

I can only echo that I think this is not a good idea and I hope it never happens. I really dislike this trend towards subscription based software products rather than the traditional one off purchase. You will always end up paying more.
