Spectrum analysis, sonogram generation software for Mac OSX

Post by Korhan » Tue Nov 11, 2014 2:59 pm

Hi there,

I am looking for software that can perform spectral analysis of a sound file and display this analysis as a sonogram. It should also be able to either export this sonogram as a hi-res graphics file and/or be able to print it. It does not have to be free software, but I don't think I can afford a very expensive audio editing suit.

I use Amadeus Pro and it does not really do what I want, but gets pretty close to it.

Thanks!
Computer: MBP M1Pro 32GB 1TB, MixPre 6 MKII
Hardware: Syntrx II, Matriarch, Hydrasynth, Minifreak, Nord Drum 2, Modular (mainly Make Noise)
Controllers: Push 3, Launchpad Mk3, Launch Control, Sensel Morph, PC4, Nanokontrol

The term you want is spectrogram. (A sonogram is a diagnostic medical image created using ultrasound. )

Sorry, I am having a pernickety day and I have been editing reports all day 8)

Sonic Visualiser is good, free.

It can export an image file, if I recall correctly.

Ocenaudio can also export an 'audio screenshot' but I think those are monochrome.

re:gram: I sometimes do editing jobs as well and totally understand. No worries. And Amadeus calls it Sonogram. :) I'll check Sonic Visualizer. Thanks!

Swishniak: Thank you! I should have mentioned that I have SPEAR, too. It's a great little program but does not produce sonograms. It does produce a rather interesting looking analysis graph, but then it does not allow printing. Since it is not developed anymore, there's no hope of seeing this in a future release.

The term "sonogram" used to mean a spectrogram that displays time, amplitude, and frequency all at once is fairly common though, even if it may be deemed by some as incorrect.

The problem is that there isn't another widely used term for that particular type of spectrogram, whereas the term "spectrogram" in the context of audio is often assumed to mean a frequency-amplitude visual (like Live's Spectrum), rather than a time-frequency-amplitude visual (term that I'm using for it in my dissertation).

Sonic Visualizer can export spectrograms in png format. I'll download the demo for Spectre. Thanks!

Maybe Ircam can help with this question.

As far as I know, composers and sound designer are using above mentioned techniques
