Re: What tech coder interns earn
Whatever the market bears I'd say.
Considering that it is probably not easy to get an internship at these companies and coders are the people essential to the products, it's probably a race to get the best people on board.
I don't have much of a problem with this.

Because you don't live in Silicon Valley and have to compete for housing with this people.

That's an awful lot of money for interns. I know West Coast USA has a high cost of living, but that's nuts. I've been in the computer industry for 30+ years and those would be very good starting salaries for actual employees.
Re: What tech coder interns earn
At the same time the tech industry is claiming there’s a shortage of skilled workers. They are conveniently leaving the term “cheap” out of that claim. But they are the ones that set those salary standards. At first it was just to keep talented people in a competitive established industry. But then all the venture capitalists turned Silicon Valley into a casino where they are willing to toss hundreds of millions of dollars at startups they are hoping will be the next big thing.
This shit can’t last. I just hope it implodes before I get priced out of the area.

Cage those idiots into your culture straight out of bumfuck-wherever they came from with their CS degree, give them lots of food and snacks, do their laundry, etc. Many will implicitly believe that's the only life that exists and they'll stick around and be boring and complacent; often doing operational wank work that doesn't really challenge them. In the meantime smaller companies are starved for talent and either fold or sell out if they can manage to make anything that threatens cutting into anyone's perceived ad revenue stream which, let's face it, is the only real money to be had in that industry.
Hardly an enviable position to be in, from my perspective.

Meanwhile a coffee startup company that caters to hipsters just announced they’ll stop providing healthcare to their part time employees.
Probably not important to note, but they have less than 400 employees and recently secured about $25 million in funding. Times are tough and tough decisions need to be made.

I've worked at many startups and it's easier than you might think to burn through $25 million.
If the average salary is $50,000 a year, those 400 employees just ate up $20 million.
