Feature Request: Load effects/instruments and Presets in Max

Post by LOFA » Sun Jan 04, 2015 4:44 am

Pretty self-explanatory heading, right? There's been a million times that I've wanted to do something in Live but something like a limit on return tracks got in the way. So, how about, since y'all are sharing things so much, back and forth between one another, why not just make some of the devices usable in max? There's a ton of things that live won't support that can easily be solved using max or externals. It would be great, since many of us already own Live, if we could use these in max and standalone/runtime apps.

I understand that there is like a hundred reasons why this is not super easy, but I also have a feeling that it's a hundred times easier than it may sound. Getting ready to develop a new custom surround system tonight, using m4l, and it's just so much harder than it needs to be.

Now if only I could remember what the name of that node-based-surround-sound m4l device is/where it's located...

Wait, you're saying you want to load Live's native devices inside of a standalone Max patch?

I wouldn't hold my breath.

Plus with the [vst~] and [audiounit~] objects I'd say you've got access to any number of plugins that can do as good or a better job than what most of the Live devices can do.

Plus it wouldn't make any sense within the Max paradigm anyway. Objects that have their own GUIs but aren't editable in and of themselves? Nah.

Energy would better be spent making very specific feature requests about those limits you're finding that Live has.

That or remaking Live's devices yourself using Max and Gen.

I totally appreciate that, but I have several established projects that I would like to modularize. I understand your logic, but it doesn't apply to my interests. That said, it is a good strategy for redoing several years worth of work.

You're right though. No breathe being held here. And, going forward, you're mostly right. Live is increasingly an unnecessary dependency in what I am doing. Wish I would stop bitching out and just get more comfortable in Supercollider, but for now, it's much easier to repurpose 5-6 years worth of hacked-approximations in m4l.
