CamelAudio quit

Post by tone61 » Thu Jan 08, 2015 7:04 am

"Camel Audio's plug-ins, Alchemy Mobile IAPs and sound libraries are no longer available for purchase.
We will continue to provide downloads of your previous purchases and email support until July 7, 2015.
We recommend you download all of your purchases and back them up so that you can continue to use them"

I wonder what happened, beyond the mindset of some people that:

"I can download software for free off the internet with no repercussions whatsoever"

It seemed like they had a pretty good thing going over there. Well, I hope Alchemy is built to last, because I use it all the time! Shame!

Since you can't buy Alchemy anymore I wonder what will be the next sample playing VST people will buy?

Possibly/hopefully they are in the process of selling their products to another company who will continue support and development. I know they aren’t the biggest developer but I would have expected a lot of other developers to go out of business before they did.

That would be good. I thought version 2.0 development was quite far already.

Yeah, I don't like this. Alchemy is awesome, and I own a ton of their soundbanks. It's weird that they should just close up shop without an explanation. Maybe the government is cracking down on businesses registered in island tax havens? I seem to recall they were registered on some island or other... :!: :?:

This makes me think about how Spectrasonics isn’t exactly a monument to frequent updates or a vast catalog of products they can survive off of, not to mention their paper “manual” is actually a huge list of what you can’t use their products for legally. Sooner or later everybody who is going to buy these company’s products already has them and new business comes to a crawl.

And yet spectrasonics can still have full page ads in every music magazine. Must be doing something right.

If you look at the kvr and gearslutz threads, they posted the financial filings of camel as of dec2014, and they had 500k gbp in the bank. So its probably not a bankruptcy or anything of that sort. Most are speculating a buyout since there had been talks with apple at some point earlier

Surely their software must have value should they choose to sell the source code and perhaps pass on some developers as well. Camel was one of the more interesting music software companies. I have been looking at the Z3TA+ but I got so much tools already.

I look at those companies and I see NI looming over all of them.

I am basically done with buying any more 3rd party software. Komplete Ultimate 9 /10 is enough. Will buy 10 when the price reduces and I'll update live with the new iterations.

I have thought this several times recently when using the NI stuff. Hard for the smaller guys...
I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.
