not that macbook, the 13" macbook pro is the one I'm talking about, the retina with 2 thunderbolt ports etc..,

seriously though it's all relevant, I used to carry around an mpc 2500 with me everywhere I went in a bag but now my macbook 11" is lighter than the bag I carry it in, I just prefer that. the new macbook pro 13 is 3.84lbs, once I add the few controllers I keep with me to the equation it's considerably less fun and on top of that the iPad sans wooden case is in the bag too.

No, no no no no. It simply is not. You're nowhere near 60, my dad built a two story house in his late 60's by himself for the most part, and he's not a super big guy, or overtly testosteroned out. Personally I think you get the most bang for your buck with the new 13” rMBP which includes the new force touch pad. But I get when you are dropping anywhere near $1,000 you start wanting the sexy light and slim factor. It is pretty ridiculous though considering the tanks that laptops used to be. Even the MBPs are feathers comparatively.

I gave up on laptops years ago for music production. I get way more use out of the 27” monitor on an iMac than I did the portability of a laptop and I don’t have the workspace real estate to just hookup a nice monitor to a laptop. I still use laptops though, but just for playing music with iTunes or Tracktor and for porn. Don’t need a high power laptop for that.

I've got mine hooked up to a 27" thundy when I'm at home but yeah you understand beats it's like this shit cost too much already, I can't be bothered with actually feeling the weight of the laptop I'm carrying, it's just going to constantly remind me of the money I could have spent on like fresh produce etc...
I might just have to give the 13"rmbp a try, guess you can return them but I hate to go through the trouble, I just feel like if they turn around and spit out a macbook air with the specs of the 13"rmbp I'll be pissed but I don't think I can get away with only 8gigs of ram

it doesn't work that way. hard drives need RAM but RAM doesn't need hard drives. the two are not interchangeable.

I don't know about Windows but on OSX the OS uses swap space on your hard drive for virtual memory, not that it's the same or anything but unless you're using huge orchestral libraries 8 GB is going to be good enough for more than 95% of people making beats in Live. Just make sure to keep 25% of the SSD space empty and you should be good starving.

The thing about cowbells is as soon as someone mentions it, it's all you can hear in the song!

I see Apple more as de-evolving than evolving... Hardware, & especially software evidence very strange, often anti-productive decisions. One example: tools hidden away or missing altogether. Results of designers dwelling in an ivory tower for too long? Change-for-the-sake-of-change?

My jump from Snow Leopard to Mavericks has resulted in daily frustration at the seemingly irrational decisions that were made. Don't know if the insanity crept in with Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks, but ick. Just plain ick.

Mostly I've liked the changes. The only two things that irk me are that you can only turn off Notifications for a day without hacking the OS, and the hidden User Library, which is accessible via the Finder /Go menu with the Option key pressed. I love the lack of bubble crap in OSX now.

well I've got Yosemite on my mid 2011 airbook right now and it's def slower, before this I had lion, of course I only have 4gigs of ram but things are slow... I love the arturia v-collection but it's slow too and I've got 70gigs free on the 256 ssd internal.

What OS did you update from?

I'm about to install Yosemite on an external drive to test it. I expect to find things that I also like. Some things have gotten better over time All in all, I'm concerned with Apple dumbing everything way down.

Apple has this very well thought out. It’s all designed to make the more expensive options look more appealing. If you’re already willing to part with at least $1,000 than what’s another $500 or so more if you get more power and a little more futureproofing?

One of the first things Jobs did when he rejoined Apple was kill off a bunch of products (something like 70% - 90%?). There were too many options and it was too confusing. Seems like Cook is looking to undo all that and if the new Macbook is any indication there is now going to be some vastly underpowered option but it’s sexy and loaded with new tech for you to beta test before it goes into the more respectable options.

yeah in Windows it's called Page File. I actually typed a sentence about it in my response and then deleted it because it's faster than a cold start but it's not RAM... there's a bottleneck. more RAM is better period. no matter what option student goes with he'll still have that option... but it's never caused anybody to say "wow fuck buying more RAM" it's a work around at best... one that should be on by default.

A quick Googling didn’t show if you can upgrade the RAM in the new 13" rMBP yourself. Something to consider if you can.

Also the 13” rMBP has a SD card slot. The Macbook does not.

I'm going to check that out, I need to get into an apple store and sit with one for a while, the feel has to be just right. Going to an apple store leaves allot to be desired though, soon as you walk in it's like being jumped into a crip gang, and the swarming doesn't stop.
