Sample Library on external drive?
Sample Library on external drive?
need more room on my local disk, was thinking about transferring my ableton sample library on an external... i've heard this can be done with NI's komplete with the installer being that their sample library is huge. how would i go on about doing this with the ableton files? any videos online? also, would there be any kind of latency/loading running the sample library from an external disk? i'm using a Seagate external hd 4tb for mac (the grey one) brand new.

I think you can move the Live library anywhere. Just go to the preference of Live in Library tab and set it to the new hard drive where you've put your user library.

Bad idea, external disks are slower - especially when you access multiple files. I work on RAID mostly for that reason.
If you need more space, try deleting some of your samples. Personally I don't use 90% of samples on my HD and these are only 10% of samples ever downloaded

Re: Sample Library on external drive?
For my laptop I use FreeNAS via wireless.
The NAS has the LIVE library (all my packs), My Sample Library, and NI Komplete libraries.
Performance is NOT great but it works.
I would imagine that an external drive would work much better than my setup.

Re: Sample Library on external drive?
Thanks to this thread I moved all of my Kontakt library to my external drive freeing up about 120gb on my internal drive. It feels glorious!
Took about 30 or 40 mins to copy across the library and then another 5 mins to tell Kontact where the new libraries were located.
I'll test the rig for performance this weekend.

Re: Sample Library on external drive?
if you use external you should use an ssd if you can afford
if not 7200rpm minimum for hdd

Re: Sample Library on external drive?
just get a bigger internal disk - 2 gb for 50 quid or whatever - not worth the hassle of external except for backups imo
Re: Sample Library on external drive?
when you say external hd's are slower, do you mean it's affecting latency? what exactly do you mean by slower? right now i'm using a seagate 4tb for mac, newest version.Warmonger wrote:Bad idea, external disks are slower - especially when you access multiple files.
