Drum Synth

Post by Division Monarchy » Tue Oct 27, 2015 12:10 am

A really dope, highly tweakable drum synth with a lot of envelopes and LFOs. Not a 909 or 808 emulator. Like a Dave Smith Tempest meets Elektron Rytm8...

Since we have Drum Racks already, why not just load up any synth(s) you like into the rack? Way more powerful than a standalone drum synth.

I currently use an Elektron Rytm. But I would probably sell it if I could get the same tight and focused workflow in Ableton/Push 2.

Right now, Ableton Push 2 are unbeatable for ease of use in sampling, chopping, etc. But I think drum synthesis is still lacking a bit.

The max4live individual drum synth machines are great for quickly dropping onto a pad in drum racks. Each one is very simple and focused on HH or Kick or Shaker, etc. I think this is the best approach instead of dropping an entire regular synth on a drumrack pad. The CPU is lower and the parameters are focused for quickly tweaking percussive sounds, no wading through multiple banks. You can easily build a nice little drum machine with these and control it via Push 2 since there aren't a billion extra synthesis parameters on them.

However, it would be fantastic to simply have more of these! Different flavors, newer, higher quality, etc.. But yes, like the already existing max4live drum synths, continue to keep them as little individual machines, not a do-everything drum synth. Like the individual machines in Rytm, each one is focused and specialized.

Also, improving parameter lock functionality on Push 2, getting it in the same realm as the Rytm, would seal the deal.

Please Ableton, put this in Live 10! :)

Beside Hearbeat and Tremor I use also the Designer Drums pack as good starting points. These Operator built synthetic drums illustrate well what can be done with a synth for drum sounds.
