If I did in fact purchase Ozone (I’m still not convinced) it was probably back when “only lazy assholes use Ozone” and then I uninstalled it and buried it in a hole in the backyard because I didn’t want having that Ozone Sound holding back my music career.

I then had a PRO tell me not finishing tracks is most likely what is really holding back my music career. By then I forgot about Ozone and at some point/version Ozone went from lazy asshole tool to respectable tool worth having.

So I tore up the backyard and it appears that I bought Ozone 3. Buried right next to it was pHATmatik PRO, Spectron, Trash (ironic), XRB, and iDrum. If American Pickers resold vintage music software I'd be on an episode.

Who else is joining me in ignoring NI’s warning that their $25 Christmas voucher will end Dec. 31st? If it in fact doesn’t work after the 31st I think it would be a first in my experience.

Hold up. Is there actually anything new in Reaktor 6 if you aren't interested in building your own synths? Might be worth the upgrade minus $25. It says 70+ instruments but are those all also in Reaktor 5? I don't see any mention of Reaktor 6 exclusives.

I’m intrigued by Ozone’s stereo imaging module because it can monoize the low end frequencies for optimal sound on the large club speakers my music isn’t being played on. Is this a good thing and are their other plugins that do that just as easily? This lead me down the rabbit hole of “mid side” which made me shit my pants in confusion with the attempted explanations.

As for the "monoising": can't you just use Utility (or the equivalent in a DAW you're actually using) on the desired frequency range? For Live users, there is a nice rack somewhere here on the forum for completely transparent frequency separation. I think it's called x-over something or other; I'll post it if I find it.

I'm not an exclusive Live user, and in fact just upgraded to 9 while not having touched 8 in years. So I'm a big fan of "use this in any damn DAW" options.

After about a year of researching and hesitating I decided to get cracking on my orchestral library with Metropolis Ark 1.

It falls under epic loud action which I really didn’t want to start off with but it’s getting highly praised and I wanted to take advantage of the release discount. It has a lot of staple orchestra instruments and is 75GB in size.

I was originally going to start off with the new NI Ensemble libraries but they aren’t on a discount that is about to expire. They are also getting highly praised but more “solid and developed in partnership with proven quality developers”, not “you won’t need to buy any other libraries of these instruments”. But they are getting praised as high quality as opposed to NI's usual practice of "Here's your stock horn library starter kit". I think the NI libraries coupled with Metropolis Ark will have me covered in a lot of areas, just buying them in the reverse order I was intending.

Hm. I think I asked you this before, but doesn’t “multi band limiter” also mean “really screw things up in unique creative ways if you don’t know what you are doing.”?

I don’t know if you’ve tooled around with the recent update to Logic, but they updated a bunch of native effects plugins, both GUI and features. Long overdue. Even longer overdue is updating the native instruments. Possibly the worst GUIs ever. I also just found out their newish Drum Machine instrument is actually just a middle man app that points to Ultrabeat. Way to Band-Aid that one.

I checked out the new Logic only to see what they had done with Alchemy. It's not a bad app, but I'm pretty happy with Live and Studio One, so I just didn't want to dive back in to Logic right now. They definitely have some funky graphics though.

Limitless can be a single band limiter too if you want. Normally I stay away from multiband processing unless I really need it, but this is so transparent it's scary. But yeah, while you can use it rather simply if you want, I think it's when you dive in to the more advanced functions that it really shines.

I never really got deep into Logic’s features until I subscribed to ADSR’s YouTube channel. Echo Sound Works is a big Logic user on there and there are usually 2 or more tutorials a week on Logic features or processes which are kind of enduring because no matter how much of a skilled Logic user he is he always comes off like he excitedly just discovered something. The only time he ever really mentions Logic’s shortcomings is after Apple fixes the problem and “previously you used to have to do it this way which was cumbersome”.

I think the only time I'll deal with multiband limiting is if I send the track to you to use it.

That thing is insane! Not surprised you've bought it already. I'm probably going to have to buy it as well. I already feel more comfortable using it than other limiters, even though it's possibly the most complicated.

Also just wanted to say a big thank you! to you for posting before and after wav files of your work on your site. You get the exact right balance between loud and dynamic etc.
I'm in the process of getting tracks together for the inevitable search for a vocalist, and it's great to drop your before and after tracks into Magic A/B for comparison to my own attempts at mastering for demos etc.

As a pay back in case you haven't demo'd it etc. check out Track Spacer from Wave Factory. To my ears anyway, a much much better approach to sidechaining bass and kick. Using EQ instead of gate or compression to duck bass makes a ton of sense to me, your ears are pretty good at discerning different competing high frequencies, but low is best if it can be on it's own.
