Thanks Angstrom. I must say I have stayed away from Oscillot, partly due to an increasing allergy to M4L.

I must say I am more and more inclined to Madrona labs. They don't have infinite options, and modulation sources are limited, but they are wonderfully musical.

I have now been looking not at Aalto but its sibling Kaivo - a kind of granular synth plus physical modeling synth with lots of modulation options - has some amazing sounds. Wonderfully tactile and gritty sounds, very interesting and organic. It's the first time in a while that I have been actually excited about a new synth 8)

Tom Maisey, developer of The Mangle granular VST recently released a beta of his new plugin, Tangle - Modular FM Synth:

Not Buchla-esque, but modular, and might be of interest; hella cheap too (£20).

this looks very good. A nice interface and a good promising start for a piece of software.
I installed the demo to see how well it performed and ... it doesn't show up in Live. rescanning, restarting, nope - nothing there. *sigh*

I had the same problem, even after installing the visual studio dependencies. I managed to mitigate it by de-selecting the custom plugin folder, and re-selecting it to force a rescan - simply rescanning didn't work for me.

I tried the "force rescan" trick which involves holding down alt on a pc, but that didn't work, so then I tried what you did .. and that also has had no impact.
tomorrow I may try re-installing it, but after that I give up.

I don't know if the demo was updated the same time as the last update, but the installer should prompt you to install a visual C++ component that may be missing on your system? (Assuming you're on Windows).

KVR Thread may be of help: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 1&t=464344

Is there a windows user anywhere without a visual C++ runtime.
Who are they and how did they manage it!?

I feel like I must have every variant ever produced of this very, very stupid and yet omnipresent runtime.

. If a program asks to install it I groan like a glacier. "Fucking make use of one of the 87 other vc++ runtimes you damn retarded piece of shit" I scream as I slam my forehead into the keyboard to trigger the install to proceed. A stream of blood pools between the keys as my teeth unseat.

I was messing with Aalto for the exact same reasons as the OP, wanted a soft version of a more Buchla style workflow. Interesting concept and I liked some of the sounds I got, but the smallish GUI kind of took away from immersive vibe I'd want from a modular.

It is! I like both Kaivo and Aalto, but prefer Kaivo. Unlike many (it seems), I like the interface. Very rich sound, some truly bizarre and satisfying bits emerge often. Its combination of granular synthesis and physical modeling can result in some very organic and strange virtual instruments. I almost went with the Kaivo+Soundplane setup (check YouTube videos), but it's a bit expensive at this point for me.

I only have the demos though, as I want to fully explore Granulator II + Live's own devices (like Corpus as the resonator etc) in a DIY modular setup (Live is pretty much a modular synth itself). Sure, it won't sound the same, and that's fine.

Bazille is also one of my top synths. Be sure to turn the MC (multicore) switch on or it will quickly start to drop out audio, if you decide to get it one day. Use the Gearporn skin from the very start (all controls on one page). It looks complex but isn't. Well, it can be, but it's pretty much like most synths - oscillators generating sound, feeding it through filters and envelopes, and possibly sequencing and oscillating that signal. Except you can plug almost anything into anything on top of that or along the way of that route...

You own Zebra if I remember correctly - don't forget it's modular power either! And its physical modeling is basic, but very powerful via the Comb filters.

You can resize the interface by dragging the window corners about - it's vector graphics so it doesn't end up looking all pixelated.

I'm really loving this emulation of this 60's era VCS3 modular synth.

Same here, I like XILS 4. It's musical and powerful. Also Softube Modular with the expansions. As a long time MS-20 user, I've been waiting for the filter module in the Modular format and Korgasmatron II with FM rock! Also like Rubicon and uFold II for it's quality and effectivity. Since I also own Heartbeat, Modular really make it much more useful and fun. It provides everything I need for a strong modular foundation and able to live with just what's available now. But of course it can be an endless journey, can't stop thinking about the Atlantis, Cylonix Shapeshifter/Rainmaker, Metropolis and Jellysquasher. Been eyeing on that since a long time.

Well, I recently got Aalto second hand from a fellow member here and I'm in love! Amazing sounds.

My love started with my first test drive when I stopped Live playing and sound didn't stop! I recorded eight minutes of modulated noise and feedback that sounded totally organic, both digital and reminiscent of noises I've made with analogue synths like the MS-20 or the Trident.

I've already incorporated it in a collaborative track where Bass Station and Minilogue figure together with the TR8.
Make some music!
