Guitarists using Ableton... a quesiton
Is there anyone using Live on it's own, without any other plug-ins, as their main setup. If so, I'd love to hear more about your setup - which Live plug-ins you're using to create your tones/sounds.
My goal is to use Live - it's looper and other effects - to compose ambient/shoegaze type of stuff. In a perfect world, I don't want to have to deal with racks of effects (a la Guitar Rig) to achieve these sounds. I'd imagine it's possible with Ableton. Right?
Thanks.

Definitely doable, especially with the Amp and Cabinet plug ins it comes with. On their own not my favorite, but they work good together.

Thanks. Do you have any idea what's the most recommended (and easiest) solution to use pedals to control live (for guitarists).Tarekith wrote:Definitely doable, especially with the Amp and Cabinet plug ins it comes with. On their own not my favorite, but they work good together.

Sorry, can't help you there. Guitar is my main instrument, but the pedal aspects for me are just dedicated effects (Timeline, Hall Of Fame, etc).

The midi pedal option for guitar works well if you are proficient at midi cc programming, there are resources and tutorials specifically for pedals such as the behringer http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FCB1010.
Like the other poster mentioned, hardware pedals are hot. There really is a lot of DSP advantage to using hardware pedals such as Strymon etc...
But that's not what you asked.
Most guitarist use a pedal board such as the one above, you can check out State Shirt for some great inspiration and ideas though he uses hardware along with software and the midi pedal..

as for plugins, you can use Live's distortion, delays, and reverb and see what you get! After all, its about being original in the end:) you never know what you may come across! Experiment .
all the best

if you want an example of what the built in devices can do I made a few amp racks
http://angstromnoises.com/ableton-guita ... d-effects/
these aren't really shoegaze style, but that's very do-able

My local music store recommended the 1010 - but I'm NOT proficient at this at all. If I were willing to pay someone to walk me through this... can you recommend anyone on this board? Thanks.sana48 wrote:The midi pedal option for guitar works well if you are proficient at midi cc programming, there are resources and tutorials specifically for pedals such as the behringer http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FCB1010.

I had a 1010 years ago, pales in comparison to this IMO:

I'm always shocked more people don't use the Line 6 boards, they work fine as a generic midi controller.

My local store suggested this as well - but also told me a lot of the units are returned. Claims guitarists express concern about the "soft" part of the pedal, that it's too unfamiliar to the on/off click sound of a real pedal. I'll look into this though.Jbvdb wrote:Some people really enjoy the Keith McMillan controllers

So it's easier to use? More/less plug n' play?Matt_Quinn wrote: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ ... oCNSvw_wcB

Yep, pretty much. Definitely easier than the 1010 in my experience. The Line 6 has a software editor that you can use to do initial set up stuff once, but after that, just click midi map>touch parameter you want to control>step on pedal>click midi map, done. The expression pedal can control 2 separate parameters, and you can plug an additional external expression pedal in if you need more control.

Interesting. What about power? On sweetwater it says the unit is powered by the RJ-45 jack. Can it be powered by usb as well? And does the exp pedal have a foot/toe-switch also?Matt_Quinn wrote:charvel-floyd wrote:So it's easier to use? Is there really no dedicated Ableton foot controller out there? You would think by now there would be....
