Thoughts on purchase - pioneer Toriaz sp-16

Post by cmreal04 » Tue Sep 20, 2016 7:45 pm

Hey guys,

I'm not one usually to ask these kind of questions, but I've been looking into buying a pioneer Toriaz sp-16 and wondered what your thoughts were on it, as a live performance tool. It's a pretty big investment, so I was hoping to get some thoughts on it.

Thanks.

you might want to check/ask in the Gearslutz electronic music forum, there's a loooong thread on it over there.

In what way? Is it really worth £1200 (in your opinion)?

To unhook the computer totally and have that quality of instrument yes...

In comparison you can pretty much do everything with the Push and Live but i liked the pads a lot more because of their size and the whole editing element was really smooth...

It is version 1 though and already there's been firmware updates to fix things like sync etc...

Would advise getting hands on!

i would have been interested a lil bit but the sampling side is cumbersome.. have to select a pad, sample it, then save it and only then use it..

not being able to sample directly to an open pad and loop immediately is like so 2010...lol

Yeah there's a couple things I expect to improve with updates.....

This is a good gamble for me tho, I've been finishing seventy percent of my tracks using a feeltune rhizome for the last 2 two years, and that product is no where near as complete, but it gave me the closest feeling to being "unplugged"

I have Push 2 and Maschine (over the years every Maschine controller). I tried the MPC Live bc I was in search of the live layering over my dj set in a standalone box. What I wanted was the Maschine workflow, so MPC didn't work for me. When I read the specs on the SP16 I thought it sounded like a lot of cash for a low-spec device & shrugged it off.

Well, now I have the SP16 and the AS1 on my desk and, ya know, despite the low specs and limitations - these products are FUN and they just WORK.

I think Pioneer should develop the v2 with a decent MCS backbone, more RAM, a BATTERY and the option for an internal SSD sample drive (like the MPC Live). If they are willing to invest in this, I think it'll destroy the MPC live and it'll give Maschine a serious run for the money. One FX slot per pad, 32 second sample limit - all sounded TERRIBLE to me. Then I realized you can work around all of it.

I'd like to see the ability to chain patterns together for playback, like the AIRA products, but for now this is great. I can work with Ableton or Maschine to get a project rolling, bounce it to the Toraiz, add the AS1 layer over the project, and set it up next to my Dj set for live fun.

Give it a try!
