Ableton isn't Native Instruments. If they are able to pull it off they will support it. Whether this is technically viable I can't say.

IMHO, Ableton should really make a move this year with Live.
All other DAW's are really developing at a nice, regular pace with new and exciting improvements.
(wink wink Reaper, Logic X, Tracktion, etc).
Ableton isn't for too long now i think.

I'm new to Live, so what is their track record with regards to announcements - do they do it just like that out of the blue, or it happens on music events, like Musikmesse that's starting tomorrow in Frankfurt?

That´s what nobody really knows besides the ones who had to agree to silence.
A big part of the critics about their customer communication.

The only experience from the past is that Abletons like surprises and don´t like
expectations.

Ableton don't tend to use trade shows for announcements.
Live 7 was just a web announcement, it was October 2007
Live 8 was announced in a January 2009, on the web.
Live 9 was again a web announcement March 2013, there were some "leaked" videos before hands and then a week later the site changed.
