New Live User

I am new to the ableton live program, and I am very interested in using it for dj mixing. I have a P4 3.2Ghz 1 Gb Ram with a normal sound card.
What do you recomend me to buy. I want a controller for home use.
Mackie Universal Controller?!? I have almost 2000$ i want to invest.

Is it possible to buy a mixer and use it to mix 4 channels from ableton and use a uc33 only for ableton effects for each of the 4 channels.

What equipment do you recomend ?

i suppose your computer is a laptop? anyhow, if this, you'll need this:
a soundcard with 8 outputs: RME Multiface/MOTU 828 or something like that/M-audio/.../... try to avoid USB-gear. most of these devices have midi as well, which you will need for the uc33 (which you indeed can use for controlling the fx in ableton for all 4 channels).
i suppose you want a dj mixer, and not a PA mixer? whatever suits your needs/budget.

or you could mix all in Live with the uc33 and invest in good monitors if you haven't got them yet.

It's not a laptop. What sound card do you recommend. Being a desktop a PCI card is better then firewire?

since i'm very happy for more than five years now with my creamware cards, i haven't followed up on the pci soundcard market. although i think the creamware cards are superb, they wouldn't suit the DJ needs, or rather, they are over spec'ed for dj-ing.

it all depends how involved you wanna get. if it's for home use only, i wouldn't spend all that much on a fancy soundcard.

like i said, you could easily do with just a stereo output and mixing it all in Live with a midi controller like the uc33. whatever feels best.

The M-Audio audiophile 2496 is cheap and has gotten very good reviews. It only has two ins and two outs though.

A PCI card will be cheaper then a Firewire card, BTW.
