TR-8 Midi clock
Hi I have spent 2 days trying to figure this, How do I send midi clock start / stop messages from an ableton midi clip to a TR-8. The TR 8 will receive midi in sync but I want to be able start and stop the TR-8 sequencer from midi clips. The TR-8 is set to this...... Midi clock, play, stop messages are received. According to the Roland manual its able to receive this type of message. Anybody please??

Re: TR-8 Midi clock
As long as you have your MIDI preferences set correctly, you can start/stop with Live's transport buttons. But not sure how you'd do that from a MIDI clip. If you're using a MIDI clip to sequence the TR-8, doesn't it stop playing when the MIDI clip stops sending notes?

Thanks Richie, I can start stop from the transport and it will play in sync but It won't start or stop the sequencer on the TR8 from a midi clip. I am in the process of making a live set for giging and want to play the TR8 live in sync... by starting the sequencer then impro on the TR8. Total head wreck trying to sort it.

Clips don't send MIDI sync, Live does whenever the transport is running.
Best you could do, is set up a click clip and send that to a box that sends MIDI sync to the TR-8. A bit expensive just for that, but perfectly do-able.
How much must you use the sequencer in the TR-8?

Thanks Stromkraft,
I am working on launching clips and stems along with live looping of ambient pedal steel guitar, guitar and minilouge. The tr8 is coming in and out of the set and to stop it and start it in sync is crucial. I like to actually preform with the TR8 so you can use the swing feature and improv with it, It has more groove this way... So do you mean get another midi box? I am unsure what you mean?

Well, something like the Roland SBX-1 that can take a DIN Sync signal. The DBX-1 may be overkill though, but there are number of boxes out there that can do this.ZULUDOG1973 wrote:So do you mean get another midi box? I am unsure what you mean?

mmm fairly pricey for a SBX-1 I will have to keep pulling the volume knob, its a shame the TR8 can't be triggered from a note to start and stop even if the clock is running in the background. I was hoping someone might have an alternative solution via some clip magic...... Anyone?

Well, I assume there could exist a plug-in or MFL device that can send MIDI sync and MIDI start and stop signals. If it does, you could send the MIDI output of this track straight out to your dedicated connection to the TR-8. Hopefully you could also make some control clips with automation to control when this plug-in or device sends these signals.ZULUDOG1973 wrote:mmm fairly pricey for a SBX-1 I will have to keep pulling the volume knob, its a shame the TR8 can't be triggered from a note to start and stop even if the clock is running in the background. I don't know of one though, but sure feels possible.

I shall have a look around, I find it hard to believe that I am the only person on the planet that would like to work this way. Thanks for your input if I find a solution I shall report back.

Re: TR-8 Midi clock
actually this is kind of interesting and possibly a cool feature request. seems like there is an explosion of good hardware out there with sequencers. why not have clips that send transport control messages over midi?
you could fire a clip that sends clock to maybe an octatrack in a live set...then stop it whenever you want.

Definitely a useful feature for outboard, where do you make feature requests ?

I should also add that I'm not sure if Live allows for a MIDI Clock signal to be sent via a track. I've never tried this.Stromkraft wrote:

No, Live doesn't allow MIDI Clock to be sent via a track.Stromkraft wrote:I should also add that I'm not sure if Live allows for a MIDI Clock signal to be sent via a track. I've never tried this.Stromkraft wrote:

But a M4L device can generate MIDI clock and bypass the track via Max externals.

Re: TR-8 Midi clock
I have yet to jump into m4l, good to know that's it's possible. It would be a great feature to have in live anyway. Thanks!
