ABLETON forum admin - please read

Post by aklisiewicz » Thu May 25, 2017 1:40 am

It really drives me nuts when I see the admin limiting features of this great (free!) board. I run phpBB forum myself.
I REALLY SEE NO REASON TO LIMIT PEOPLE AND DO NOT ALLOW TO POST IMAGES AS WELL AS SOUND FILES !
If you are afraid of security issues (perhaps you need to spend some time and learn how to keep the forum in shape while allowing people use most important features) https://www.phpbb.com/about/features/?s ... 0eda6c5380
It also looks like you use super ancient version and really need to update it.
If you configure attachment extensions in the settings you can allow only images and sound files to be attached. It is so simple to set up (use the link below to learn)

Perhaps your intention is to keep it that way to match Ableton site settings where the site looks like made 50 years ago. The look and feel is a matter of preference and I'm sure users will have different opinions but having basic features available is completely another story and security has nothing to do with it because there are thousands of phpBB forums using full features and have no major issues.

Posting sound files could be also limited to the size (i.e 60sec) with in most cases will not violate any copyrights, although you can also make a disclaimer that the post owner is responsible for not violating Copyrights. User who violate those can be simply banned from the forum (although I'm almost sure such cases would be marginal). Somehow other soites that allow to post sound files have no problems with the Copyright issue.

PLEASE DO SOMETHING! IT IS A SHAME TO HAVE THOUSANDS OF USERS NOT EVEN BE ABLE TO POST IMAGES OR SOUND!

Actually you're looking than the only one who can't figure out how to post images... too bad for someone who also runs a forum :P
Please don't take it badly, I'm joking here.
Anyway we've already discussed this, so use the search feature please.

Now please stop harassing the mods with your pet issues and acting like you are the white knight for thousands of oppressed forum users.

If you need help learning how to post links to audio or images, let me know privately and I'll walk you through it step by step as clearly as I can. It's not too hard, I showed my 6-year old niece how to do it for her Minecraft forums and it only took her a couple tries to understand it.

In the meantime, I humbly suggest that all these demanding posts of yours in capital letters are probably not the right way to start a conversation on something you'd like to see changed here on the forums. We're always looking to get feedback on what our users want, but there's ways to do it that are a bit more respectful than your approach.

Having said all that, at the moment our developers are busy on other more important projects. So improvements to the forum will not be coming in the immediate future. We are definitely listening to what people want changed for when we decide to tackle this though.

SITE ADMIN - perhaps you still did not understand what I have said. I requested posting an image NOT A LINK TO AN IMAGE. I know how to do both and if you do not know how to enable posting image files there is tons of places to learn how to setup phpBB for that. The fact that somebody could post inappropriate picture has nothing to do with the security but just forum maintenance.
I have simple rule where users report forum abuse and if the user posts inappropriate content he/she is removed from the forum. I run also a group on Facebook with over 22000 users. There is no problem with posting pictures (although from time to time there is an inappropriate image posted). Such users are eliminated in a mater of hours or minutes. Please just go on-line and take a look at other forums based on the same phpBB software and see the difference for yourself (although you probably do not care because you are not the user). I'm not interested in creating another account on some other site just to be able to post images there and post the link here. Why would I do it the hard way ? Same apply to sound. I could easily post TEXT in this forum which is unrelated to anything or is just simply spam. Why you allow to do this ? simply because there is no difference between crappy text OR crappy picture or crappy sound. All of this has to be reported, taken care of and user needs to be warned or removed from the forum. It is so simple!

Are you asking for an upload/attach file button? I agree, that would be very nice to have.

Here's how to do it for now, for those who don't know:

Posting an image:
1. Upload to http://imgur.com/ or elsewhere
2. Post this (remove underscores):
[img_]http://i.imgur.com/yourimage.jpg[/img_]

Posting audio/video:
The Ableton forums don't support embedded SoundCloud/YouTube players. I wish they did. Regular links work:

I do agree with you - the forums look really bad and lack features.
Tiny text spanning the entire viewport width isn't good for people with reading difficulties, or whose native language isn't English.

I don't know if CHANGELOG.html is always updated, but is Ableton running phpBB 3.0.2? It's from 2008 (just like VST 3, lol):

Please remember that your forum account is tied to your Ableton license, i.e. you have to have an Ableton license to have access to the forums. This was done a few years back to cut down on the endless spam and bot traffic the forum was getting, which basically rendered the forums unusable. This has been very effective so far at keeping such attacks away.

Unfortunately, this also means that it's not as simple as updating to the latest phpBB like some forums do, as this breaks that relationship. Fixing this will take considerable people-hours, our developers have already looked into it. Since the forums currently work just fine as is, we're instead focusing our efforts on a certain piece of software that's a bit more important than the forum. 8)

As I mentioned before, we're well aware that people want updates to the forum, we do too! But there's bigger fish to fry at the moment, so for now you're going to have to be patient and use the forums as they are.

We also have accounts on all the major social media platforms if outdated forum software is just too old-school for you.

I am IT professional for 35+ years so I would not buy any cheap or crappy stories or excuses (sorry). I quite well know how things work (although do not know everything). Not sure what version of phpBB you running but even older versions allow to attach images. If you tied up this forum MySQL database to your license accounts that makes things even easier because no one who has license with Ableton would be so stupid to post the spam and risk loosing forum access. Therefore I see no reason not to allow attaching images (I think this applies to the sound as well).

Perhaps you are pumped to much fear. Keep in mind that fear attracts what you afraid of (law of attraction).

It is no crappy story or excuse, I've explained to you the reason why you won't see this in the near future. If you're unhappy with the forums as they are now, you don't have to use them. If you lack the self-restraint to do so, we are happy to take the option away from you.
