M-audio 1814 Probs

Post by Maximalization » Sun Sep 18, 2005 5:39 pm

Two days ago i installed my fresh m-audio 1814 firewire
installed it correctly - i knew about the hotplug issue etc

Now, when i use it, it crackels and stutters amazingly hard, and my whole powerbook (running os10.3.9 seems to shock)... i have to set the latency very high too. I tested with sets, made with other interfaces, in ableton live.
When i opened a new live file, and used the 1814, it seemed to work better
also with for example itunes, it seems to work quite well...
i reainstalled the drivers... nothing better...

I knew about those drivers issues but still ordered it... maybe will switch it for a firebox...

anyone some tips?

Check that gain levels are moderately low. There are numbers of places where this can go wrong. It is important to familiarize yourself with the maudio application/interface as well as the variety of levels that can be reached between the maudio app, LIve, and the actually physical postion of knobs on the unit.

I have had my unit at many different levels of latency with noticeable changes in performance below 10ms latency (total latency as read in live audio preferences.)

I no longer get the crackling like I used to, and I'm set at 256 samples, 13ms delay, to make it easy on my cpu.

I do, however, still have serious issues with clipping and digital distortion. It seems to pop up when my guitar or snare is too loud, but I can't seem to get a very clean sound unless it's up high. I hesitate to balme the unit for this, as I am still somewhat inexperienced in digital recording, but I find it very unusual why I can go through a very long, heavy jam session, and it will just cut out for either no reason, or the 1000th, not any louder, snare hit.

If you decide to stick with the unit and get things under control, I would be very interested in hearing more about your work experience with it, and/or your workarounds.

it was nuts... i hooked up the unit an hour ago, and it worked 'flawlessly'... but then the crackels came back... i could indeed be with high end noises, that it comes...

if i find a buyer i sell it, i think...
i hear good things about the firebox. i knew it allready, but wanted the m-audio

if you have an airport in your machine make sure to turn it off.. I got glitches with wifi and my fw410. Turned it off and everything ran smoothly.

indeed...

hmm, the unit seems not reiable... some times it works a bit, sometimes it doesn't - i didn't use it very much yet, though... anymway my old emagic A62M usb runned smoother and faster than the m-audio
also my friends motu 828 i have here works likes a charm...
hmm, maybe will checkout the presonus, of maybe some edirol...
i want something portable -bus powered- ..

airport shouldnt effect it. If it does fix it by turning it off, its a fluke.

Plug in delay compensation works for plugins. Perhaps this is what you were thinking of?

Personally, while I would love to have a plugin that made my maudio/apple Live setup magically turn into some kind of MOTU/Amd 64 laptop, I would prefer some magic beans that made it possible to drink bears at work...

hmm, i love my apple and m-audio/evolution stuff (only the FW did some tricks now :? ) but i can understand the bear thing (although i am a home working musician:))

also that same friend gave a tip about setting power performance at his highest, witch looks good...

i notice i have most of the crackling and popping problems when using plugins (effects).
like with ableton recording sessions, or tweaking the EQ while deejaying...
