make the subpatcher to a bpatcher. Put the mouse a the left corner of the subpatcher > click on the Arrow > Tranform to Patcher to Bpatcher
copy the text, open Live > drag in empty M4L device > open Max editor > paste > save M4L device

sorry feller - i'm being really thick :(

if i have that bpatcher visible in presentation mode, then i can't click and drag the slider within it to move it to the right position for the device view? i'm probably missing something or just not understanding how it works?

when your slider "presentaton rectangel" is 0 0 then its on the upper left corner. You have to move the slider in presentation mode inside the bpatcher. Also look at the bpatcher "help" file.
copy the text, open Live > drag in empty M4L device > open Max editor > paste > save M4L device
