Remaining within key in piano roll

Post by SMRhythm » Fri Mar 16, 2018 11:42 pm

Dear all, new user here. Loving Ableton 10 so far. Don’t have much musical theory knowledge so learning but meanwhile taking some help from apps like scaler and captain chords etc.

Question is - FL studio has a function where in piano roll, editing ghost notes between chords, melody etc - piano roll can force one to stay within keys within chords while editing melody or bass line against chord progression of say pads which are made through scaler and are within key.

Is there a similar function in Ableton piano roll where keys outside chords are greyed out while multi editing multiple midi tracks?

Look at the MIDI Effects devices. Drag the scale device onto the input of your track and it should take your incoming MIDI and force it within the selected scale.

The only way I feel works is placing out all of the notes of the scale, in all used octaves, in 16ths or whatever before 1.1.1 and then collapse the display. Only notes of the scale will then be possible.

This is much easier to do if you know your scales and more of a convenience than something for people that don't know scale construction.

The problem with a MIDI scale tool is that it doesn't change the display, it only routes notes outside the scale to notes inside it. I don't find that helpful at all. Which doesn't mean you or someone else necessarily will feel the same way.

Yes Scale tool isnt allowing to see on the piano roll the notes available within given chord while multi editing midi melody against a say chord pad sequence
