"wooshy" sound...

Post by dazzer » Tue Sep 20, 2005 2:58 am

Hi all

I'm trying to create a building, sweeping "wooshy" sound, the kind of sound that comes at the end of a breakdown, just before the drums kick in again, the kind that builds excitement as it sweeps up...

I've got Live5, Operator, automat and buzzer. How would I make this sound? As you can guess from the post, I'm not exactly at the cutting edge of making my own sounds (quite new to it really) so be gentle in your replies (it may be obvious to you how to do it, but it isn't to me!)

cheers

get a microphone and blow into it in gradual degrees of hardness.

sorry, i dont know how with what you have, just saw an opening for a funney. good luck figuring it out. my only guess would be to use a sample.

You probably want either a flanger or phaser. Luckily, Live5 now has both of these as built-in effects, and they are great ones, too.

- take any synth that has a noise generator (usually an option of the second or third oscillator) and turn all other oscillators off

--> play with the volume envelope to create a slow fade-in and a faster fade-out at the end

--> set the filter to any type you want , adjust the resonance to your taste , and play with the envelope untill you have the woosh effect you're after

--> add reverb / delay to make it bigger than life

--> add flanger/phaser/beat repeater/ ...

Thanks for all the replies so far!

Damon: My girlfriend suggested recording my voice too!!!

Rob: not familiar with Speedy J, the sound I'm after is I suppose the alternative house effect to a snare roll to bring the track back in.

Others: thanks for the synthesis tips and the reverse cymbal sample idea, I'll try them out tonight after i finish work.
cheers

usually just grab a snare or cymbal noise, stretch it out as long as i want the build to be, reverse it then filter sweep it up towards the end and add some reverb (long tail) to it.... wooooosh......

My answer for this is my answer for almost everything in life: Grain Delay - Borg preset. Slap some Borg on there, find a good spot for the dot, then click the DryWet box and automate the dot. Woooosh.

god, dance music is so predictable. I guess there is a 1990 revival that I am to old to appreciate.

nice, a few more different paths to explore to a swoosh sound!

dance music is predictable? yep, i was indeed gonna include a kick drum in my track...maybe a wump noise or too....a few snare rolls.....whatever i have have fun putting together.

38 year old noob here having fun with it all and I certainly don't feel as tho i have to answer to anyone for the sounds i use in a track, just wanted a bit of advice, is all.

cheers

ps - i had the time of my life clubbing in the 90s...too old for it now, mind.

have to say that this is one of the only times i've seen someone who may have meant a funny post in jest respond with an apology/ disarming explanation for their kind of offhand remark. I just wanted to say that, angstrom, thanks for being gracious and kind with your wit. It's a very hard thing to make a funny comment without being taken too literally or causing caustic reactions, i think this is one of many examples of how forum posts, emails and the like lack the facial and tonal elements of speech in their inferred meanings. Anyway, as an observer to this post. Cheers to all for helping in such broad, detailed ways, it's important we don't lose our sense of humor while helping others, but when a comment gets misinterpreted, it's so good to clarify wth a good natured reply, very nice.
